Just a thought: I've taken a bit of stick on other threads for suggesting 'corporal punishment' in a couple of situations. Fair enough, I stand by what I believe and am prepared to be judged on what I do. But here's a scenario - I'd be interested to hear what you all would do in this situation (I'll tell you what I did later.) Situation: A relatively new, large stallion on the yard. Has previously been led out of his stable and through the external door (which is opposite the door of another stable housing a gelding) without any problem. Because he's still a bit of an 'unknown quantity', he's in a Chifney. He gets to the outside door and then suddenly goes into rapid reverse and starts kicking the stable door behind him - in earnest! His ears are flat back, his eyes are 'wild', he ignores the Chifney and the stable door is disintegrating with each kick. The gelding in the stable knows what's coming - he's up the back wall - terrified - having a severe attack of liquid diarrhoea. The stable door is in two pieces - held together only by a bit of shredded plywood lining - what do you do?

VERY good question! And just to start, i've never used a chiffney before-the stallion that I've dealt with was in a headcollar.
I imagine that I would now be infront of the stally, with him pulling back on me, right?
If he's not listening to me, then my first reaction would be to get his attention...I'd put on my cross voice and do the chicken wings-walking driectly toward him, then to the side of him.
priorities would have changed now-not to get the horse out of the barn, but to get back in control and get him away from the gelding...if it ends up that we get out then that's an added bonus. i'd be calling for someone to help too.
So I'd have walked up beside him and now try to make him turn too...but not too much becasue I don't want him actually facing the galding. I'd still be flapping and i'd have picked up something useful...a whip or empty feed bag or something and swish that around too.
hopefully by this point i'd have startled him enough to lead him away.
if this failed, I'd grab his upper lip and try to apply some pressure for the twitch effect.
If all this failed, then (and I might be shunned off this board, but i don't really know any IH methods), I would give him a sharp smack across his nose...I've had to do that before and it works...
After sorting out stallion, checking legs etc. I'd go and make sure the gelding is ok..it's unlike;y that he'd have left his stable.
then obviously he's the main priority, I'd take him for a walk and sponge him down and give him a small feed of mushy bran.

That;s a really interesting question to ask...i'm really looking forward to hearing what proper IH people have to say!

Id spin him round and give him a bloody good wack anywhere I could get his attention. And i mean get his attention any way I could even if I had to kick him...actually id be prepared to knock the cr@ out of him
Sorry but I dont like whips and dont like hitting horses.Im a great believer in that there is a better way of doing things that a smack but there is a time for safeties sake where IH goes out the window and pick up the peices later. By the time youve done the right thing the gelding could be in pieces
edited to add my ideal would be to have a bucket of water there is throw over him lol

But your still at the front end. only danger there is rearing and striking out and you never stand directly in front of a rearing horse. If youve spun out can back up. Problem with chifneys is that you cant drag a horse forwards in them very well

what do you mean "try the twitch" - do you mean try putting a twitch on him? if one is close enough to hand and you can maigically get it on inbetween kicks?

And you think he would even notice that? and you'd be able to hold onto him?

Just one of the things I would try anon...I've had to do it on horses before.
