He had been in the army working with horses when he met Monty and went and worked with him for a while as his "rider."
I think he probably combines the best of what he has learnt and has a huge experience of horses and understands that most of use do not have a round pen. Haven't seen him lately, but really liked the one demo I watched. I also liked the series he did when being "agony uncle" in one of the magazines with some really difficult cases.
If he was knocked out and was unconcious for a bit he will be poorly for more than 2 weeks, more like 6 to be back to normal.

Yes it was Yann - makes you think - if they get injured sometimes it could happen to any of us.

My reply was supposed to be a compliment! I'm sure Max would have appreciated it too! After a recent demo he was telling a small crowd how privileged he was to have been Monty's rider for four years as he respects Monty as a truly great horseman. Awww!

His books take simple methods from groundwork to ridden. Haven't got the latest, but Unlock Your Horse's Talent in 20 Minutes a Day is very good. More a book for people who want to know how horses respond and how to train them, than a How To Do It book, not enough detail. For that you need Perfect Manners and Perfect Partners.
Well worth attending a demo. He really reinforces the importance of getting it right on the ground before you try it on the horse. The audience participation shows you that you can do it too.

my friend worked for him for a year. i dont rate him at all. he is very anti women and put her in some very dangerous situations.
EDITED TO ADD Later clarified in this thread that I *who should be blonde* began a rant on gary witherford. these comments were in NO WAY at all aimed at Max! My sincere apologies!!!

For anyone that know’s Max’s work in detail will understand that it is not a ‘typically’ English version of Monty Roberts, not that there’s anything wrong with that of course.
But over the years Max has developed different methods and taken pieces from various horsemen across the world.
Why don’t you rate him at all arabheaven?
I find it absolutely bizarre that Max would ever put anyone in a dangerous situation let alone situations as I have never witnessed this when I’ve seen him work.
If anything I would say Max like’s us ladies and isn’t remotely anti at all.

Blimey thats a bit harsh, you are certainly entitled to not rate him, but to say he is anti woman is another, firstly it is untrue, he has always held woman in high regards, in the days when we employed people, which was a long time ago now probably 6/7 years, the bulk of our staff were female, our head girl was with us for 5 years.
It is a female that events his horse for him when he is working so i definately find that statement completely untrue.
your friend may have well been in some dodgy situations i wouldn't deny that after all it was a problem horse yard and in those days we worked very differently indeed and even we look back at situations and cringe, that is how the current process came to being.
the aim of which was to find a way that you could work with problem horses in a safe and logical way. that is why the ground work is such a huge part now and something we didn't then use.
in the early days of working with horses there wasn't a process as such and max has always said that he never stops striving to improve on what he is doing.

i just dont think allowing a 16 yr old girl to got on a fresh youngster in a round pen and told to just sit there until it calms down is safe she fell off many times. im not going to disclose much more info as i dont wish to get anyone in trouble but he also did a pony club demonstration a few years back and the horse didnt really have much choice in the loading, there was a lot more pressure used that what i expected (including lunge whips) maybe his methods have changed, i just wasnt too impressed thats all

Thanks for your input, they have indeed changed, as we have said many times in public. secondly, we've never employed a 16 yr old
thirdly we've only done one pony club demo and that was about 9 years ago at our yard.
fourthly we have NEVER used lunge whips to load ever
are you sure you have the right person it wouldn't be the first time its happened, poor bloke had to call back and apologise as he had confused him with some-one else

I'm sorry Max has been hurt but I am hoping I might now be able to get to one of his rearranged demos!
