They are pretty polite, its just not something I would do.
"Hi emily,
please don't take this in the wrong way but i noticed in your hunting posts, all of your horses are wearing dutch gags and I was wondering what the reason for this is?"
that one ^^ was fine, normal type of thing, could be any reason for wanting to know.
I replied:
Cause they all get tres whizzy hunting!
They all do everything else in snaffles. Its only hunting. Its nice to have breaks because we do some hairy stuff - steep hills etc. Nikki is eventually going to hunt in a snaffle I hope!
I dont have issues with bubble bits either lol and I like to have brakes hunting
They are all well schooled etc and can stop from seat. Hunting really does add an extra whizz thats hard to control. Ours also seem to be happy enough in a bubble bit.
Then I got
So has someone recommended these bits to you or what? Because it is a bit universally hated by the majority of instructors etc.
I put to you that you are not teaching them how to hunt in the correct manner if all of your horses require a bubble bit to hunt, what about xc etc?
As I took a baby hunting yesterday in a snaffle, and 99% of people there were in a snaffle, why is it your horses that are 'whizzy' and everyone else manages?
Why bubble bits?
and I replied:
Peggy I cant speak for, she is my Mums.
Megan is 21 and well set in her ways she will be whizzy for ever I think!
Meg I do everything, including xc, in a snaffle. Hunting, she used to be very bad, - broncing / rearing etc. This season I wanted to make sure brakes were not a problem as I may well have other things to contend with. She is being very very good so far, so I am hoping to start moving her on to hunting in a snaffle.
Willow (did you ever see my posts on willow? ) I had as a 4 yr old - I hunted her in a snaffle always, she did everything in a snaffle.
Nikki - hacks etc in a snaffle, good brakes. Wasnt sure how she would be hunting, so I put a bubble bit in. Glad I did as I think if she had still been in her snaffle, I wouldnt have been able to stop even on the road. My aim is to eventually hunt her in a snaffle as well.
Its hard to 'school' for hunting I find, as its such a hard situation to recreate! Take Meg. I can stop her from my seat, when she is calm and listening. We can canter a circle on such a light rein contact. I do hunter trials etc in a snaffle, sponsored rides. all in a snaffle. Hunting and shes suddenly hard to pull up.
The obvious answer is keep on schooling till it becomes ingrained to stop from seat and bit and not to keep pulling. My aim is to hunt both Nikki and Meg in a snaffle.
However I am of the school of thought that I would rather pull less hard on a stronger bit, than yank on a snaffle, if the situation comes to that.
Trying to think of a polite way to ask why you think you have the right to question my way of riding my horses - that sounds so rude, it isnt meant to! As in, do you want to learn, because its interesting to hear everyones views on why they do things. Do you think I am misguided and that you couldnt help but point out what evil things bubble bits are?
none of this is meant to sound rude btw, I am not offended - tough skinned after many yrs on forums
dunno I found the second PM a bit rude myself!
and I found this one rude too:
I got this back:
Yes, I think it is a completely wrong bit to use. What action do you think it has?
What about a pelham? Different types of snaffle?
anddd I replied
Poll action, I assume.
Mine are happy in their snaffles that they use for other activities. They don't seem unhappy in bubble bits for hunting. Safety is paramount and I would rather have control until I feel I can hunt safely in their snaffles.
Im not a fan personally of pelham with roundings, and at the moment I find I can't manage that well with two reins. I am planning on practising this anyway as I want to try Nikki in a cheltenham gag with 2 reins. Most snaffles dont neccesarily have a stronger action and with the bubble bits its brakes I am after - at least at the moment.
Not quite sure why I feel the need to defend myself to someone who doesnt know me! however I like to be polite and answer pms
Did consider not posting these, don't know, possibly stirring things? But I didnt want to bother the mods, as they arent nasty, but to me they come across as terribly rude! If you all post and tell me I am stirring I shall delete my post forthwith!
