Scarlet Pulled her shoe off again (same foot) on the 18th - she only had it on for a week. Went from walking out amazingly well!!!! to hoping lame None shoeing vet came out and managed to slot shoe back on and duct tape it on until she pulled it off again on Monday. Again unable to walk without the shoe. Shoe Vet came out yesterday (had to wait for her size to be shipped from supplier) and put a new imprint shoe on her, the change in her is pretty immediate once the shoe is on. Guess what I found when I went to the yard this morning.... it was off again - less than 24 hours later. I could have cried Shoe Vet came again today to put another new imprint on, bless him! She is being a real monkey - I think she is actually pulling them off, I wish I could get it though to her she is in so much discomfort without them. Going to the yard in a couple of hours - getting too scared to look at her feet now. For her back legs which are becoming increasingly stiff vet recommended the magnetic boots so trying to find some that don't cost the earth NFU still not paid anything on my claim - starting to have sleepless nights about it now as way over 2k.... gulp.

Charlotte, we have some magnetic boots if you would like to borrow them rather than pay for new ones ? They are a bit tatty but should do the trick, if you pm me your address, i will pop them in the post for you. Scarlett is really going to test you through all of this isn't she ? Little monkey. Have to spoken to them about using a steward clog instead ? As you know, it sits under the foot and therefore has no way of being pulled off. It might help ? They are certainly cheaper than inprint shoes too. When Sunny went onto them, he was only sore ( without them ) during the first round of using them. As soon as the second fitting came around, he could stand completely sound barefoot while the other one was applied so it definatly supports the pedal bone without any interfecance of the hoof at all. Are inprint shoes glued or nailed on ?? I would definately start to get heavy with NFU. I have heard that a lot of people are waiting on claims to be met and if there were any query with the claim, they should have notified you by now. You pay your premiums so don't put up with it. Please shout me if there is anything else i might be able to help with ? x

I've just read this whole post and what a journey you have come on.
You have been unbelievably brave! well done you.
Mare is obviously feeling better if she can jump around so much to pull her shoes off! Lol
Best wishes to you and your special little mare through the rest of your treatment!!!

Oh no what a nightmare with the shoes! Naughty girl! Hope she managed to keep them on today! They just don't understand what's best for them do they! I'm on the loo out for some magnetic boots too so if you find any good priced ones let me know!!

Hi everyone, thank you for nice words they do mean a lot on this emotional rollercoaster we are on!
Lorraine that is so kind of you to offer, thank you so much but with the was she destroys things I would be worried!
The imprints are glued on and I have no idea how she is getting them off. Again tonight with both imprints on she walked out fantastically - dreading the morning now.
NFU are really starting to get to me - will call them tomorrow and not take anymore put offs.

Would PHW work as well (not sure if cheaper or not than imprint shoes ?)
Maybe put her out with overreach boots on, has she got a bit of of the shoe sticking out behind the heels (that would be a way of getting it off with back foot !?)
Is she stabled 24/7 or at night or out 24/7 ?

I was also about to suggest the PHW and not a as expensive as imprints.. I wont guarentee she wont get them off as June has a horse who no matter who fitted them including KC himself who developed them..but she was not the norm at all. Flynn had them he had 4 pairs of them a full ID in a wrap not as thick as it shoudl be due to his foot size and we hacked out in them so I know they can stand up to the wear.,When he went into them he could hardly walk he was so sore.. I now know it was LGL.. ignorance on my part..
But few vets will know about them or know how to fit although not difficult. Not saying your vets dont of course.
Tim Mockford is in your locality and he was the one who fitted them to Flynn as he was one of the forst horses to have them when they arrived in the UK.. I would seriously consider this idea.. I know a lady in my yard who tried imprints and suffered the same as you.
It has to be an option to consider.. I have the photo shoot of them being fitted as well.. in the end I fitted the last set myself.
They have a very useful place especially with a horse with your problems.

Charlotte, i spoke to my sister Julie this morning ( who owns all three pairs of mag boots ) She said that when she bought them, you get a guarantee which says if the boots themselves get tatty or worn out, you only have to pay £10 and they will replace them ( as long as you still have the magnetics in them ) Therefore you are welcome to borrow them and use them for as long as you need and if worse comes to the worse, just pay £10 for her to send them back for replacement. Please let me know if thats ok for you ? x

Oh Lorraine that is just so lovely of you if would really help thank you so much.
She had the shoe on this morning!! Which was a massive relief.
Lulu she is on complete box rest, only moves from her night stable to her day stable and back again and they are next door to each other.
There is just no overhang for her to stand on - the vet can't understand how she is getting them off. They are a perfect fit and glued on, wish I had a web cam I bet she has a sneeky method! Luckily this one has stayed on last night so fingers crossed.

The imprint shoes are slightly further back at the heel than normal shoes, and have a bit slightly further back than the frog. The horse doesn't know this and catches it with the toe of the hind foot when moving about and that's all it takes to rip them off The only idea I have is overreach boots, thinking she'll rip that off instead of the shoe?

Update... Lorraine very kindly sent Scarlet some boots and she has been wearing them since the 1st. I have noticed an improvement in her hind legs she does walk out better. She is now on ACP twice a day as her rearing at the door was getting way out of control. She smacked her head on the stable ceiling one night and then took a massive chunk out of her face the next night It is almost like the excitement of dinner and attention is just a bit too much and like a coiled spring she just explodes!!!! Very scary when I am so worried about her over doing it Shoes have stayed on!! Which is a massive relief for me and I am sure the vet!! So farrier and new set of shoes around the 21st Oct (she will have been in for 6 months then ) Keep your fingers crossed! PS thank you so much Lorraine

relieved she's keeping those shoes on! I had to keep Lily sedated most of the time whilst she was on box rest too, I felt so bad but it was really the only option in the end and all turned out for the best. Fingers crossed for further improvement!
