My mare came in very lame on the 21st April. Vet called and diagnosed laminitis. Bute, ACP, box rest etc. Mare still in lots of pain so vet called out again and x-rayed on the 25th April. Foam pads put onto feet which helped. X-rays showed rotation so vet advised to carry on with box rest, drugs, limited food etc. Farrier came out on the 30th May to trim feet. Next x rays were taken on 12th June These x rays showed further movement and farrier came out again on the 20th June to take feet further back Imprint shoes were put on on the 29th June and have been on for the last 5 weeks. Next X ray due tomorrow. Mare has improved with the shoes - gone from not wanting to leave the stable to happy to walk but very reluctant to turn. All excess weight (wasn't much to start with) has gone and nearly every rib is visible, vet happy with weight now and wants to maintain this level. Farrier trimmed back hoofs on Saturday, mare wasn't very happy with this but I feel the backs have been neglected somewhat as all focus on the fronts. Farrier wan't happy with the way mare was walking on her near hind as this is the side she lies on we though it may be muscle wastage. Will get vet to check tomorrow. Getting fustrated that we are not making more progress. On a genetic note Mare's dam was PTS due to Laminitis when she was one year older than my mare now which according to the vet makes prognosis less than good.

I'd be desperately worried about the amount of rotation even after all the steps you have taken. Is she still on pads - or good deep supporting bedding? How much faith do you have in your farrier? Has he suggested heart bar shoes or similar to provide support for the pedal bone? I'm no expert but it looks to me as though there is insufficient support to stop that pedal bone sinking - check out Pete Rameys website www.hoofrehab.com/hoof%20articles%20by%20Pete%20Ramey.htm

would it harm to get a second opinion from another reputable farrier, maybe recommended by a friend or something?

What about diet? IR? Cushings (even though she's only 7)? I'd be looking at finding the underlying cause and fixing that too - I know Khafif did improve on pergolide although like her mother she was PTS with laminitis from Cushings in her teens (Khafif 16, Paramar 18). That is a lot more movement Hope she starts to show some improvement soon.

Surely, with a horse whose pedal bones have moved so far, the opinion of anonymous people on a DG are not important? You either need another vet and approach or consider euthanasia. I can not believe this is being discussed on here!

A bit harsh SM? OP clearly has lost slight faith in what her vet and farrier are doing in the way of treatment and is just asking whether others would feel the same - she has after all supplied excellent evidence. Sometimes you need to get yourself as clued up as you can be, to discuss the treatment with the professionals, and she is simply gaining further opinions and experience to add to her own. She has not at any time asked anyone to supply alternatives to the veterinary treatment or farriery, just help her evaluate whether it could be improved on. Legitimate discussion IMHO.

I think second opinions may be in order both vet and Farrier/Trimmer if you're not confident. Have a look at Lorraine's thread... Sunny is doing well atm, he still has a way to go but I believe he is out 24/7 now (very restricted grass I believe btw). ihdg.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=help&action=display&thread=92744I assume you've got her diet sorted as well a a deep bed (shavings) and/or pads,boots/shoes for support? Jackie JA Taylor may be of help with diet, she is very experienced and knowledgeable, getting diet right is so important and Jackie may have an idea if he needs blood tests for IR or Cushings. Jackie is an expert on this DG www.MetabolicHorse.co.ukgroups.yahoo.com/group/TheMetabolicHorseI can't comment on the X Rays except that I would have hoped they looked better if they were of one of mine. Trim from what I've learned and experienced is very important so do read Lorraine's thread and look at Pete Rameys website. Pete Ramey states that he has found prognosis depends on whether and how much the coffin bone is eroded (sole etc. grows from here) and with correct diet support and trim he has had many horses make full recoveries. I sincerely hope your vet has a plan and that the next Xrays show improvement. (((hugs)))

Shadow i would be gravely concerned at that further rotation, poor pretty mare and hugs for you. I too would seek another opinion, i have seen rotation that far recover but it is a long and lonely road.
I feel your heartbreak xxxxx

Thank you Emma x
Scarlet begs every morning for her breakfast and calls to me when she sees me coming she happily plays with her jolly ball and scratches me back when I groom her.
The x rays are all doom and gloom but I will know in her eye when she has had enough until then we will fight with everything with have.
