Don't blame you. Feed free choice soaked hay or as much as Jacky suggested soac. Good forage (safe) intake is essential I believe.

That's what I am thinking - even if we maintain the skinnyness at least she is getting plenty of fibre on this diet plus the vits & minerals she needs.

You might find she puts weight on! Re diet I'd totally stick with what Jacky has advised tbh.

ok thnks Mandal, would rather be OTT when it comes to possible infections. BH she is 15hh Cob x, I can see every rib and she has no bum due to muscle wastage. So I am feeding according to her weight tape weight. She is super skinny - I hope this is right. What do you think? I think in general you're supposed to feed according to ideal weight with the balancers. Jackie will know what to do far better than I will. I'm sure you're doing the right thing . You sound like you've done lots of research

as I said don't believe it will grow over as in horn cover it again but it may well dry out and harden and form a seal as it were. Yup that's pretty much it. Try not to worry too much, infection seems amazingly rare in these cases. As long as you keep on with whatever your vet advises you should be fine. Check with Jackie on supplement doses, I am not sure if it's recommended to feed much above current weight when it comes to a high spec of trace elements, though it may be fine.

I'd just like to say how much I admire you for all the care you have given your mare. My friend has a horse who has a horse who had acute laminitis and I have seen how hard it has been for her and the mare. She wasnt as bad as yours, but she is now riding again. Its wonderful to see how well your mare is improving, and its only through your petserverance and commitment.

Thank you Leanne! It is really hard especially when we take a step back but she is being so brave and is such a fighter. After seeing her mum go through this and how she just gave up it shows how really strong Scarlet is and just how much life she has in her.
I had a wobbly moment a couple of weeks ago when she was having a bad day and got it into my head that I didn't have enough photos of her and if the worst happened I would forget what she looked like. I had a frantic panic attack so poor OH raided the garage and produced a box of photos of her starting at 2 hours old up to just before the lami. Made me cry but I am happy that I have them.

Shadowofachance take a look at moo's threads on Merlin, he was on box rest for 12 months, it might give you a bit of a lift, our farrier was brilliant we have a lot of faith in him and our choice was to be farrier led, and he saved our horses life, I'm not saying thats what you should do, but it may give you a bit of encouragement not to loose hope, Merlin is nt out of the woods yet but he's doing well. have a (((((hug))))))

I'd also like to say you are very brave and a credit to your horse. My pony has had a very mild bout of lami and xrays showed 3 degrees of rotation in front feet only so farrier is coming tonight to give him a thorough trim. It has been an eye-opening journey, but nearly as much as your's has.
I hope she continues to improve. ((hugs)) to you as it is hard, but you are doing a fab job, bless you x

Just wanted to say I will also keep my fingers crossed for your horse. Mine started with laminitis symptoms yesterday, never had it before and usually I am very careful (see It's happened to me thread). We haven't had xrays yet, but vet and farrier are coming tomorrow and we are hoping for a mild case.
It is a scary disease and from what i am reading can be a long slog to get back from so my thoughts are with you and your horse

Scarlet had the vet and farrier out again yesterday for her 4 weekly trim and new set of imprints. Vet was happy with her improvement and farrier impressed with the amount of growth in the last 4 weeks. She was sedated and this was a much less gruesome trim so I was in no danger of passing out unlike last time! She walked back to her stable well and vet and farrier left quite positive. And.... this morning she walked out better than she has done since April!!! I know there are still lows to come but this made my month! There was no hesitation just a relaxed flowing walk - even NH OH stopped in his tracks!!! Everyday vet and shoe vet have been discussing her and they both commented on how bright she is and how well she is coping so I think all professionals involved are more positive now (within reason, I know we have a long way to go). I have been doing a little bit with the clicker each evening before she has dinner and she will now touch the target where ever it is. Starting on the anti mugging lesson this evening!
