That's fantastic - well done Biscuit! Maybe you could write an article for the Listening Post magazine (the Intelligent Horsemanship members magazine - join today for only £20!) telling people about his story and your progress?

I saw Monty and Kelly at Your Horse on Friday 7th November and at Myerscough on Sunday afternoon. The Your Horse Show was very interesting as instead of Monty and Kelly doing the work two Students did both Join up and Loading. This was very interesting as it shows that the methods when taught correctly are clear to see. Monty giving instruction from the side was very nice to see and the two students achieved Join Up and Loading very successfully. As the audience may have contained some sceptical people it was nice to show how teachable the methods are. The horses at Myerscough were very interesting and very challenging. The two horses for loading were particularly difficult and showed how dangerous loading can be without the correct aids and equipment. Once again I enjoyed the Demo and always take away some new information and points to consider when working around horses. I certainly look forward to his next visit, it would be nice if the weather were a bit better though

Traveled over from Ireland to see Kelly, Monty and all the team at the Your Horse Live show on Friday November 7th 2008. Wow!, quite an overwhelming experience, especially if you've read all the books, and watched all the DVDS and video clips. Everyone was so kind and warm, a big thank you from Pat and Julie at Phoenix Equestrian, www.phoenixequestrian.com

I've never seen either Monty or Kelly at work before, and deliberately didn't read this thread before going to Myerscough yesterday (Sunday).
I can appreciate why some experienced horse owners would not believe that anyone could make such quick progress - but, I think, one of the reasons for it is the speed at which Monty and Kelly can read the horse's body language, and respond to it just as fast.
One example of this was when Monty was doing join up with one mare. He turned away to invite her to follow, but was still watching her out of the corner of his eye. She took a half step towards her, then hesitated. Monty instantly responded to her hesitation, turning towards her again, taking a step or so towards her, then turning away again - and then the mare, having read his repeat invitation to follow, walked in and followed him.
Many people, I'm sure, who have only recently learnt join-up, would have missed that slight hesitation. Others might see it, but not instantly realise that the mare was saying "I'm not sure", or know how to respond to her uncertainty.
Nonetheless, at worst, it would only have slowed down the learning process; as long as they were sticking to the join up principles, they'd still get there in the end. In his talk, Monty was adamant that anyone can learn join up - and, in that, the demo convinced me that he was right - though it doesn't necessarily follow that we could all attain his fluency in Equus!
Another remarkable example was a very spooky dark bay mare, who, when she came in, looked very lightly built. When she left, I swear if I'd been shown before and after photos of her, I wouldn't have believed it was the same horse. She appeared to be a completely different build of horse - much fuller, and rounder, in her neck and right through her body. Nobody can persuade a horse to fake something like that. That change was real.
Another thing I've learnt from the demo; a thing I'm sure has happened right under my nose loads of times, but it's never registered.
I was watching the body shape of one of the horses, and, as it tensed, noticed it's rump drop, 3 to 4". At first, I couldn't work out what had happened, so I kept watching, and saw it again - several times, in similar circumstances. In the end I realised it was the stifle joints that were flexing, and dropping the hindquarters down into a slight crouch - an obvious preparation for spinning away from a threat, or rearing, I suppose, as it shifts the weight off the forehand - but also could be taken as a very submissive signal to a dominant and threatening horse.
I think the advantage of going to a demo like this, even if you've seen it before, is that it gives you such an opportunity to see example after example of this interaction between trainer and horse, in all it's variations. It certainly showed me how subtle, complex , andfast it can be! And that I'm in no danger of ever running out of things to learn - even on something as basic as 'leading a horse on a rope'! ;D
Best regards,
Jack

Tim Piper's stickability on two rearing horses at Myerscough and Ailsa trying to get under a barrier in her 'very large horse' costume are two visual Myerscough memories that will stick with me. Along with the number of names I could put to faces at last. I was stunned to find that five people who had been on the course Grayson and I helped on in the summer, were also helping at Myerscough on Sunday - what a peculiar coincidence that turned out to be!

If you don't already subscribe to AskMonty you won't have read this account of one person's wonderful experience: Dear Mr. Roberts,
I have been meaning to write you an email for quite some time and last night's demo gave me the kick up the backside I needed to log on and put fingertips to keyboard!
I would like to start by saying a huge thank you! I came to watch my second Monty Roberts demonstration last night (8th November 2008) at Myerscough, Preston, UK and cannot begin to tell you how much I enjoyed it. You can read the rest of this account if you join the newletter list here. (You can unsubscribe anytime you want, but you won't want to!) www.montyroberts.com/register.html

Thanks for putting that link up Catrin - great idea! Anyone who's got a website will also notice that there is an option to put a link for people to subscribe to 'Ask Monty' FREE weekly newsletter from their website.

I have previously been to a Monty Roberts demo and was really looking forward to the demo at Myerscough college on the sunday. Unfortunately I completely forgot the date so it was only the sunday morning that I realised it was on. I rang the IH office to double check the times but obviously it was a sunday so there was no-one there. There was no information on any website anywhere that I could find about the time, so I rang the International Arena at myerscough and listened to a message the said there were still tickets available to buy on the door for this evenings performance. Upon arriving at Myserscough I saw a poster advertising Monty demos on the saturday and sunday evening both starting at 7:30pm, along with several flyers saying the same thing, so I thought it safe to assume it was on. As most of you probably know there was no demo on the sunday evening, however at least 20 people turned up and although personally (although naturally disappointed about missing Monty) it wasnt too bad as I live around 40 minutes from Myerscough, there were a couple of people there who had travelled from Manchester and also Sheffield, who weren't particularly pleased. I dont think this was in any way Montys fault, and more very poor advertising on the colleges part, but (unless I've missed it, in which case shoot me down :-) ) it might be a good idea to advertise more clearly somewhere the actual times of the performances on this site, so they're there to refer back to. Just a suggestion! ang x

Dear Foxy 892 Sorry to hear you missed the demo. We do our best to ensure people know the times of demonstrations and it is very unfortunate that the posters at Myerscough were misleading and their answerphone message misinformed. Our office was staffed on Sunday (although only by 1 person) and our answerphone message did state that it was an afternoon performance. We have taken on board all your comments and will be especially vigilant in making timings clear next year. For Monty's February tour all demos will be evening demonstrations. Thank you for bringing the problem to our attention, it is so much easier to improve what we do if people let us know of problems encountered. Hopefully we shall see you at a demo in 2009 IH Office
