When I showed my PBA at the County Shows, I was still at school and certainly couldn't afford to go out and buy a whole new outfit, for myself and my pony! So we made do, with what we'd got, still had fun and didn't feel embarrassed, but perhaps I've just got a thick skin! We still managed 8th out of about 36 in the ridden Concours D'Elegance at the Anglo & PBA Championships at Stoneleigh. I guess that things have changed since the 90's!
The entries are so poor at some of the shows (the ridden Anglo's and PBA's at the South East Arab Show at Ardingly last year, only seemed to have a couple in each class, if that!) maybe it's not just the cost of the entries, transport etc that is putting people off, perhaps they feel they can't show their faces if they haven't spent £100's on the correct outfit!
I know what you mean about the flowing mane and tail SS3! When my girl was shown by her previous family, she was shown in an Arab plait and was bottom of the line. I pulled it and plaited it and at the same show a few years later, came 2nd to Mayway Marietta.
It's a shame you're not in Kent Toni! I have 2 show saddles you could have tried. 1 Havana Keith Luxford and 1 brown Arabian Saddle Company Show Saddle.

ooh make me jealous heidi! i was chatting to a friend at the yard about all your advice and was feeling a bit and she said is it really worth it? so i was thinking of not entering ridden but asticking to in-hand but then on the drive home i thought, no! im going to do the ridden class! im going to ride him in a snaffle because he doesnt need a pelham. im not buying a new hat for the show! yes i will pull and plait him and make sure he looks fab, but if the judge doesnt appreciate him for the beautiful arab he is, i dont care, he's my baby, i wouldnt swop him for the world and as long as we have a good time and he works and behaves well, whether we get 10th out of 10 entries or 10 out of 40 entries, i'll be happy ;D

Go for it Toni! I hope you have a really great day.
If there's 2 in the class and "Perfect turnout" naps with the judge and "Smart, but not so perfect" goes really well, who would win?!

Arabheaven but do you really need to spend the money buying it all, surely a bit of begging and borrowing could be done. When we first started out doing this 'properly' (ie before I was adviced otherwise I borrowed canes, jackets, hats, you name I was secondhand lil too once I did buy my own, only replacing with better and newer as and when I felt the need. As long as it was clean and tidy I was happy. I remember daughters first lead rein show saddle being tan cos it was the only one I could afford, just as everyone else had havanna , she still won in it and she still came last in it, but when I upgraded to a nice newish havanna one, she still won in it and she STILL came last in it. But I did feel better knowing she was turned out correctly though and it must have been because the judge was totally blind The only one thing I would say change if you are able (borrow not buy) would be the hat other than that go and have a good day as if you need telling. What size hat are you ? Another naughty trick..... I used to run round the showground begging to borrow hat/saddle if people were not in same class as me saying I had forgotton our of course our manky one would be there as back up in case no one obliged then I would say I had borrowed it to cover up my embarrisment

Hi A.H I've just realised I never sent you drawings of quarter marks, but I see you're ok -----sorry. You should wear a tie, pref a coloured one not matching your jacket . one with a horsey theme would look nice if you can manage it, oh, and a tie pin! Are you working on your show? Good luck

wear a tie, pref a coloured one not matching your jacket . one with a horsey theme would look nice if you can manage it, oh, and a tie pin! oh dear.... i thought it had to be tie matching your jacket or a stock. im so outta touch with this showing malarkey.... i dunno what kind of tie you mean then... pony club tie?? i thought i didnt have to do a show? just walk, trot, canter each rein with everyone then judge rides them...? he's been working very nucely in an outline in all paces though finds ti a bit tough after a while in canter but he tries bless him the show is a week after i get back from egypt and he'll have had 2 weeks off poor guy.. week of intense fitness and schooling sessions!

;D No, not a pony club tie, I meant a coloured tie with a horsey pattern on it, but don't worry, a blue one will do. Whether you do a show or not, will depend on the time given for the class, but it is usual for you to do a show as well as the judge riding-----they certainly did at the South of England County show

ok will practice show just incase. at bath and west there were so many entries they rode together then judge rode. i have to plan for all scenarios though i.e if its a small ish field if horses are lined up in the middle of the field, go round them... at the back fo the field, go infront of them oooh getting nervous just thinking of it havent shown for so long and tis gona be sooo hot gonna fry in my jacket!!

8-)The steward will (hopefully) line you up giving enough room for you to do all your show infront of the line up ----- you can canter around the back of the line in readiness for your gallop staight up the long side.

i am going tot ack shop today to get zac a hanging snaffle so i can ride him in double reins but not worry about stupid pelhams Two reins on a hanging snaffle? I'm confused. If you've got a dad or other half with some ties you could try raiding their collection for something that matches/goes with your browband colour. Charity shops often have cheap ones too.
