Rio (on the right) was described as dark brown by the vet at her vetting. Tess (on the left) on the other hand is a dark bay according to her passport, I struggle to tell the difference

I thought he was liver chestnut... but vet adament brown. What do I do when he is the one doing his ID papers? Can't change vet - not an option!

Don't worry about it ------------------It really doesn't matter, but if you are concerned, put Brown/ liver Chestnut that covers all eventualities ( apart from grey) ;D

Haven't read rest of thread so bound to have missed something but he definitely looks liver chesnut to me. My friend has a pony almost identical and he is classed as liver chesnut... So is my girl classed as 'brown' ? Her Newfie passport says black and she is definitely jet black without a mark on her?

lol its just not very cool he he So mean Gem, there is no bad colour for a good horse, I'm always amazed that people even care...... Urm Sue it was a joke As long as they have 4 legs I dont care what colour they are at all and after all they all go brown in the mud!!

PP if she has a black nose, and no tinges of brown anywhere, then yes, she is black.

I dont have a piccie of my brown Connie unfortunately. And it will be a while before I can get one as he is out and I am on box rest after my op! Very neglectful of me not to have taken some by now, Ive had him all summer. Will have to sort that out. His eyes look 'dilute' if you know what I mean? Sometimes colours dont show up very well in photos either which dosent help.

Weren't black horses registered dark brown as it was considered bad luck for a racing horse? (why??!) That rings a bell in the depths of my mind, but black is a registerable colour for thoroughbreds now. But then, so is bay overo! (Skewbald to us oldies.....) There are some black horses, tho' rare, they need to have no red pigment at all in the hair.

Gem, stick Diesel's feet in a growbag, I'm sure that's what they did to Solsti when he was a baby, seeing as Mum was 15.1h and Dad was 15h and fat chops is 16.1H!

This lad was registered black I think he is dark liver chestnut, but someone I know was arguing for brown. This is a summer photo so his coat is a bit paler
