A friend of my daughter was injured yesterday at Cadwell Park. His injuries are severe and he is critical, HOWEVER, the BBC website announced this morning that he is dead!!!!!
I came into work and was telling someone about his crash. Another girl then piped up "Yes, look! It's on the BBC Website. He's dead!!".
I instantly thought 'how am I going to tell my daughter?'. I knew I couldn't phone her, so was planning to go home lunch time and break the news before someone else did (via MSN or text or something).
Ten minutes later the same girl said "Oh look. they've updated their website and it now says he's critical".
My daughter had spoken to his sister last night who told her that he is critical and is "hanging in there". When I read that this morning, my heart sunk.
How could they get it so wrong and name him too? I think it's absolutely dreadful.

Well, it seems they should have left their original message up. They have now turned off his life support machine.

This has certainly made me ask myself so many questions this morning.
My daughter has made but LOST so many friends to this sport and she's only 15. Should a 15 year old have lost so many friends at that age? I first lost a friend when I was 23 and that hit me hard. My poor daughter is only 15 and has lost 4 already. My son has also lost 3 very good close friends.
I think I have some soul searching to do today.
I feel so terribly, terribly helpless for Chris' family. How must they be feeling right now? A wonderful, talented son, aged just 14, with a bright future ahead of him. So, so sad.

I know what you mean about the soul searching Bridge. My son races (although not that often) and the accidents are numerous. He has lost so many friends/aquaintances to this sport. It makes it very, very frightening. He is 39 though and not 15 not that that makes any difference, a life is a life at whatever age. Amazing really have son into motorbikes and one daughter into horses, two of the most dangerous sports around. Sending your family and the young mans family my condolences.

oh my god that is awful don't know what to say. I am 16 and I lost a friend last year and it really upset me cos i think when you first lose someone your age you sit up and think, this doesnt go on forever, something could happen to us tomorrow. I cant imagine how the young lads family are feeling. I hope your daughter is ok too if she wants to talk to someone outside her friends and family she can pm me anytime.

Bridge, Im so sorry to hear about this tragic accident. I lost my best friend when I was 19 and Im afriad that it affected me terribly for years afterwards.
I'm sure though there is some comfort that he died doing something he loved, I hope you are able to support your daughter through this

Poor lad, thoughts go to his family and friends, including your daughter Bridge. I suppose their only comfort will be that he died doing something he loved, but what a young age to lose your life. Lets hope he knew nothing of what happened. x

My thoughts are with you and your daughter Bridge, also Chris' family, what a sad day it was for you all. The tragic statistics seem very high for losing a life at this young age, I'm not sure that I could encourage participation, there again how can we refuse them sometimes? Soul searching is what it is, being a parent is never easy. Love to you xx

Thanks for all your nice comments. I'll pass them on to my daughter.
And Bethebest, I'll tell her she can PM you. Thanks.
I'm sorry to have posted here as I know it's not really relevant, but I just felt so angry when I read the BBC site this morning and then to have the news we had has just knocked me for six. My daugher has also just received a call from a lad he raced against, who was devastated and in tears. My daughter didn't know how to respond to him and that upset her even more. She's never seen (well, heard) a teenage boy cry before. She just didn't know what to say to him. Life can be so very, very hard sometimes. I'm old enough and tough enough to deal with it, but at 15 it just doesn't seem fair. And I can't stop thinking of his family.
Thanks everyone.
