I have my qualifications up to BHS(SM) and full Intermediate. I also examined up to BHSAI level for the BHS from 1989 until two years ago , when travelling became prohibitive after moving to North Wales. I followed the anti BHS thread and steered away from the site as I did feel that the qualifications that i worked very hard for over many years were being discredited as "Traditional" and therefore cruel which is a load of twaddle. I am proud of what I do, but must admit that towards the end of my time examining I did become a bit dissilusioned at the standards being allowed to pass exams.

Well done you pentaran, that's no mean feat getting those! I've only got my Stage 2 and PTT at the moment, hoping to take my 3 next year once I've got into jumping again.

I did mine years ago, stages I II and III along with the teaching certificate and Horsemasters exam, so BHSAI; although must confess to drifting away completely from BHS and into more 'alternative' methods. Still benefit from a good classical grounding though.

Passed stage 3 and BHSAI back in 1979 (!!). Have also done Pony Club B test and H test (was using this as a route for BHSII). Fractured my neck a few weeks before I was to take my Pony club A test....by the time I was well enough to ride, I was too old to be a Pony Club member! Never got round to taking stage 4/BHSII.

took my Horsemasters and Prelim Teach = BHSAI many years ago. It was during that training that I learned basic horse health care and was given the opportunity to see various horses receiving treatments. I am having to use what I learnt on a daily basis at the moment here in Mustique. Today I poulticed a quittor and without the knowledge of poulticing and bandaging I learnt during the BHS training I would not have been able to treat this horse. Can anyone tell me, is there anywhere, other than BHS schools, that teache healthcare? Do vets teach you? Can you go out and watch them with other horses than your own? I'm sure equine colleges do healthcare courses but many small BHS yards offer part time (once a week type things) courses in this stuff - please let me know if you know different, post here to help others know where to go for this information/training/etc. Not particularly for/against BHS, just asking about this specific aspect of training. THANKS!

Got the old riding club phase exams I II & III - I think they were a good idea for new horse owners and I certainly wouldn't have bought a horse until I had got to 3rd level. Oh riding & road safety as well.

There is a college very local to me who takes on two lots of pupils per year on free BHS stage I and II courses where you go in the evenings/weekends and do approx 15 hours a week for 6 months then take your exam, VERY good idea for working people (they also do BTEC First and National Diplomas in Horse Care) I got my III tution privately from a BHSII (an exceptional one) I have taught myself my IV theory and hope to sit that as soon as I can afford it but wont be doing the riding, wouldnt pass stg I at the moment! I have taught two people sucessfully through thier stage I riding and horse care and then taught one through stage II and she passed ;D I know YRC does something to help towardsa stages.
I dont actually know of ANYWHERE that will teach horsehealth, thinks like correct poulticing and bandaging, what type of wound needs to be treated by what and the names for types of wounds, what needs to be in a fast response kit and so on. I learnt all my health care through the BHS/PC, out of books and through hands on experience from head grooms/YMs. I dont think books are enough though to be honest, and a lot of people who first buy horses havent spent years working with horses first have they?
Puts into question whether there should actually be a horse healthcare certificate through the BHS or through any other organisation meaning horse owners from all aspects can learn more about horse health
