Actually forgot but I did do the stable management exams as well (about 14 years ago) they used to have health aspects but I gather they have all been changed now.

The stable management/first aid training my daughter receives through our branch of the Pony Club is excellent. At C plus level (usually taken at 14) candidates have to be competent at bandaging for excercise, travel, rest and wounds. My 15 year old could give first aid to many types of injuries thanks to this training. The practical tuition they receive is very thorough and well worth the membership fee alone!!! They also do human first aid which I think is an excellent idea. Of course, once you are "over age" for PC this is not much good...but many parents in our branch "spy" on the stable management sessions and have even requested some sessions for them (particulary the non-horsey parents).

Where have the riding clubs gone?? I must admit I lost interest in them as more and more professionals appeared to be 'recruited' in to gain success at competition level and they seemed to forget what they (i.e. RCs)were about. I mean the quadrille at Olympia some years has had advanced dressage horses and riders competing at PSG level. Very one-horse owner RC level I don't think - don't get me going on this it makes me so angry - I have even know a BSHI who was asked to 'join' the dressage team as was an advanced eventer. Luckily both refused on principle and said a) if they wanted to compete it was affiliated and so not professional to be on RC teams and b) how could they ride against their pupils (especially in case they lost)!

Well there are a fair few of us here then, I did my stage 1,11, and 3 and horsemasters in the days before the modern stages exams and trained under the old working pupil system , then did my PTT. I then worked for two years on an event yard where the horses competed abroad and at badminton and Burghley, so it was a good grounding on all aspects of management . I returned to the centre again as a working pupil and duringthat time did my intermediate and stage four. From that point I got a job running a riding centre on the Essex/ Suffolk border ,which became a BHS exam centre in its own right, training working pupils and paying students towards their exams . This was well befor the days of college courses and NVQs etc. I did my Stable managers exam in 86 and was invited to be an examiner in 87 , I thoroughly enjoyed examining but as said earlier, I dont think there was anything to beat the old working pupil training system of old at a good centre and got a bit disheartened at the upsurge of colleges and their ( no disrespect intended) at that time very theoretical training. I now use my training and knowledge in owning and running my own stud farm , where i take a few in every year for backing ,and feel I am old enough and sensible enough now to utilise all my knowledge gleaned from years of experience and dip into various methods of approach depending on the horse. I believe that we have been doing join up in this country for years in our own way but never gave it a name, it was just horsemastership and understanding and then someone gave it that name and people behaved as if it was a brand new thing and went mad on it.!

I too only did Stage I and felt that was enough. I thought that a lot of emphasis was placed on etiquette.
I'm not knocking that for those who are into competing and following tradition, it's a great thing but just not for me.

I passed my BHSAI in 1982, but had already worked with horses at a private driving yard and riding school before then. I then went on to work for a couple of years at the local riding school before discovering that there were better paid jobs out there for no qualifications at all! And shorter hours:-)

I did my stage 1 (and Pony Club B test) years ago but can't decide whether to do any more. I don't dislike the BSH (I feel it does a lot of good work) but there is a lot of emphasis on doing things 'the BHS way' for exams. For my stage 1 I had to ask someone to help me fill a haynet because apparently that is the safest way! I can't afford to take the exams at the moment and I don't know how much benifit to me they would be as I don't want to teach as a career (just a bit here and there, which I do anyway) and it would take me years to get my 500 hours.
I know some great BHS qualified instructors, but I know some pretty appauling ones too, so I'm very undecided about their value in that respect. However I think they are great for motivating you to learn the basics about feeding, anatamy and horse care.

I have my BHS riding and road safety, and PC B test, I'm doing my PC lungeing test in february, which is new for 2006 and you have to do it before your A, and I'm doing my A test care (on the 14th April used to be H test, now called AH test) and hopefully my riding in a few years time. How old do you have to be to start your stages? I'm 16 and hope to do a direct entry to stage III.
