Thanks so much for making the donations.
Yes, some of the human loss stories are just agonising. It's the same in any disaster, of course - god, just look at the scale of what's happened in Brazil - but the truth is that we DO relate to it more when it's people we know who are in that zone.
It sounds as if in the worst zones of the Lockyer Valley, the deaths outweigh the survival of horses... But the lack of fodder continues to be experienced by everyone who has a horse. Lots of people who own horses here don't have a lot of money anyway - they do have land and grazing, but not necessarily high incomes (and a lot of people can't work at the moment anyway). Losing the grass is hitting them and their horses very, very hard.
The paypal rate is tolerable - it usually costs far more to pay a bank fee for an international transfer.

Posted by Quest Equine Welfare on their FB page, this gives a very good idea of what horse owners are experiencing in *less serious* areas. Warning: graphic photo. www.facebook.com/pages/Balanced-Horse/194549292625#!/photo.php?fbid=10150114986794120&set=a.238064924119.169173.209921719119

That article made me cry Jane. It's hard for us to imagine what it's really like out there and reading that, brings it home to me just what the long term aftermath is going to be like. I keep trying to imagine what it must be like to be in that poor person's position with injured horses, mares and foals and weanlings relying on her for their care, and she has lost EVERYTHING -------------it really doesn't bare thinking about.
