I know human life is deemed more important, but every time I see the news showing the horrendous floods in Australia I wonder about the livestock ---------especially the horses who must be being washed away and drowned. Can any of us imagine what it must be like to be powerless to save our beloved horses from this horrible fate. We have all moaned ( me especially ) about the cold and the snow in the UK but we have managed, and there have been comparatively few deaths to livestock due to extreme cold to my knowledge. Do we still have any Aussie members who can tell us what's happening? Does anyone still hear from Miranda Sophie ?

I know ss, I was thinking about the animals this morn as I watched (in horror) the news. The pics of a family of 3 sitting on the roof of their car as a huge swollen river undulated around them, I just hope they were rescued. It is truly awful. I know that Jane is safe as she is in the South, not sure about Miranda.

I always think about the animal deaths in these situations and how devastated I would be. You are right SS3, we spend our lives moaning about what we don't have, and being sick of the snow/ weather etc etc and really we should be counting our lucky stars that we and our animals are happy and safe .

I know. We thought our floods in Britain were bad last year, but it really puts things into perspective, doesn't it? I'm really fed up of treacherous ice this winter, but at least at the end of winter my life will go back to normal...

I found it sad last week on the news, when they showed 2 horses on a small grass island, I always think about the poor animals.

An Australian colleague of mine told me yesterday the floods aren't as bad as the press are making out. Apprarently her family live in Rockhampton and despite the press coverage she said it's only a small part of the town that's flooded and it's really hilly so most of the town is safe.
I do feel for them though, especially horse owners, not knowing whether they're safe must be dreadful.

My family are in Toowoomba and we were horrified yesterday because Darren, his wife and their youngest were away on holiday in Fiji. His two eldest daughters ended up on opposite sides of the town and still cannot back together. Vicki is home ( thankfully not flooded ) with the dog and Tasha is on the other side of the floods at a friends house. Darren is trying to get back but from the Airport there is doubt whether the roads are passable to get back ? There are many many, missing dogs and cats apparently. I think the last count of missing humans was 70 or more. After spending 5 years in drought conditions, i think the shock is what hit them so badly. I cannot tell you about the horses but sure that Darren will keep me posted when he knows more. RIP to those who have lost their lives in this tragedy.

I was thinking about this when it first started, all the cattle in that area and of coarse the goats too My friend who used to live in that area and has a married son out there says the older houses were built on pillars but many of the modern houses aren't.

This is part of an email from my friend who moved to Aus almost a year ago.
We were in Toowoomba shopping when it happened, and just managed to get out before the road out shut. For anybody who doesn’t already know, the city of Toowoomba is built across the top of three mountain peaks..........unlikely to flood you would think being so high. When we set off the weather was fine with the possibility of thunderstorms, and nothing major expected. When we drove out of the car park there were torrents of water rushing down the roads with flash flooding right through the city. We just managed to get onto the Highway before it shut and get home, as it was, we drove through 2 ft of water. We’ve been watching it on the TV ever since, counting our lucky stars. Later on the water washed down the valley in a 7 meter wall taking houses and lives with it. They are describing it as an inland tsunami.....very very terrifying. At this point there are 8 people dead and 72 missing. The water just came with no warning what so ever.

Gawd Treacle Tart .... That sounds awful Must be terrifying !!!! I too worry about the animals when there are floods and fires .... It must be so bad be powerless to stop it and powerless to help your animlas. Our house was very badly damaged in the 2007 floods ... the water was over knee deep and i remember just watching it flowing in everywhere and knowing there was nothing i could do .... It`s awful .... I couldn`t imagine watching my animals go through it and knowing there`s nothing i could do to help them

Crikey, sounds like what I said about Rockhampton only applies there Does me me think I should stop complaining about the rain and snow we have here.
