In some circumstances it might be the least worst or only option, the good of the horse is what should come first, and that means looking at the whole picture, not just the feet.

I know several people who have shoes on for the sound they make!!!! so actually saying they look better with shoes just says that we have to look further than aesthetics for the good of the horse. Can we have some sole pics? Good to see lots of healthy debate and support - just a thought in slipping with the pads - was the tape under the hoof?

the slipping in pads seems to be my error and poor choice of tape (doh!) will retry this weekend when I have more time! She was 70% better last night, again in hand in field and school no sign of lameness, but under saddle again a bit oochy in trot but no where near as bad as weds night. I was on board for about 8 minutes, 4 circuits in walk and 1/2 in trot to assess. then a little more walking and off I got. she's still tearing round the field like a nutter lol. Diet has been address, Topspec has been totally removed we are now on 500g HiFi (soaked and drained only as I forgot to get lite!) + CalMag + salt and thats it! sole pics are not great quality sorry no post trim sorry!

How long had she gone between trims before the June 09 shots? Surely not 4 weeks? There's a massive amount of wall growth there which might account for the lack of progress getting rid of the flare. It is a balancing act and I know your trimmer had trouble but the trim does look on the conservative side from the solar shot.

Yann I've just double checked my diary she was last trimmed Tuesday the 5th May, next trim was Tuesday 2nd June 4 weeks on the dot! (both trims were even 11am!!)
Trimmer has commented on the speed of growth, the horizontal crack on her NSF was half way down the hoof 10 weeks ago!

It does look like the toe has come back since having the shoes off, I thought they looked pretty good, but have to say if growth is that quick, you might have to get trimmed at shorter intervals. You say you have a better relationship when it comes to handling her feet - could you rasp them, just little and often, obviously guided by qualified trimmer and the horse....please don't feel I'm saying you should if you don't feel it's for you. If she's hooning around in the field, have you thought that the lameness might be from somewhere other than the feet - do you ride on grass?

Have you got/can you get any sole pics post-June trim? It would be great to be able to compare them to the pre-trim pics . Its difficult to tell from the plantar view.

only the one of her NSF posted above MrsMurchin. Rio isn't normally affectioned and she was after cuddles after I took that one and I succumed and utterly forgot to take on of her OSF!! I'll try to remember to take that one tonight.
I think I'm going to start taking my camera weekly and get pics every week of how her feet are growing!

I'm following this thread with great interest as I'm considering going barefoot with my pony. He's unshod behind but shod in front, so next time my friend's trimmer comes to do her horse I am going to have a chat with her about the ins and outs.

will persevere, we WILL get there Of course you will! ;D I think naturegirl is not familiar with the reasoning behind removing shoes Arabmania and like most of us at one time looks at shod horses and sees neat and tidy, looks at some barefoot pics and sees cracking chipping etc. You can't see that so easily in shoes... remember when you looked at horses feet before you had learned different things. [/quote] yes i do point taken i used to accept the remedial farrier way of doing things when horse owners had all kinds of problems with their horses feet! now i just feel soooo very sorry for the horse that has to contend with this kind of shoeing approach and waiting for the problems to become much much worse so very very sad

unfortunately you will get chips here and there due to the outer wall being weakened on the ground by the WLD. I have the same prob at the mo with one of my mares. the hoof growth should slow down eventually. i think some feet kind of sigh and go mad at simply being able to when shoes are first removed

Boots arrived today THANK YOU LAURAOMG it was like she had new feet! lil beggar nearly carted off with me, she's not normally forwards.... but beggared off and needed a fair bit of "aaannnnnnddd trooootttttt" to get her back down to earth lol woweeee what a difference! pennies being saved for a new pair once feet are going to be in a more consistant shape! Once we'd worked out she was perfectly sound with the boots on, thought we'd have a few minutes boots off. and sound not as happy on her toes but sound. Thank you again Everyone!! WE are going to attend the dressage on Sunday (anyone know if trailblazers allows hoofboots?) but will NOT go into the class if there is one hint of soreness, I'll have her in the boots in the car park and will take em off to warm up and see how she is. If nothing else its more good experiance of the show atmosphere.
