This is a very interesting thread. I do a bit of clicker but I have been taught by my instructor and I don't know all the theory behind it. Fizz does head down and stand for clicks so far but I am trying to think of more things to try with him. Lx

Just to say a quick Hi to you, as have not posted on this board before.
It's great to hear that your instructor is introducing you to clicker training - and it sounds as though Fizz is getting an excellent grounding in basic manners. If you would like to look into clicker training in a bit more detail, visit Alex Kurland's website 'the click that teaches' for some interesting articles and introductory information. Her book, 'The click that teaches, a step by step guide in pictures' covers a whole range of material - from basic manners and handling though to ground work and ridden work - also some stuff on 'trick' training which can be a lot of fun. Another excellent resource is Katie Bartlett's site - I think equineclicker.com will get you there. Hopefully this will be of use to you. I believe, although I am not 100% sure, that some of Alex's dvds are available to watch on Horseflix - there was a discussion about this on her forum a little while ago - she is happy for her dvds to be on there, so I don't mind passing that information on. They are well worth watching - but there is so much info on them that they merit several viewings!!
I will also post a link to some videos of a clicker trainer on you-tube - this lady is very creative, and comes up with lots of things to teach her horses.
Tess x

Thank you for the welcome, Stybba (where do you folk get the nice smily things from - I am using a box to type this in called 'quick reply' but I don't see any smily faces I can use?) I have tried to post a link here to some videos I mentioned earlier, but as I am completely technologically incompetent it probably won't work as a link - but if you type it in, it should get you to hyxc's channel - where there are lots of her videos - my personal favourite is number 23 - makes me smile every time I watch it - brings a whole new meaning to the words balance and harmony, I think!! (would put smiley here if I knew how to). I have to say, that the most recent one she has posted, some liberty work, is not one of my favourites (not that I could do what she does!!) - but don't just look at that and let it put you off - lots of her others are (to me) pretty good - and she certainly seems to have fun with her horses - which is high on my list of priorities!! Also do watch with the sound up - her squeals of joy when the horse gets it right does add a certain something to the whole process!! Here is link (sort of) www.youtube.com/user/hyxc - and video number 23. Hope you enjoy Tess x

Those are lovely clips will have to take time to look at them all, thanks Tess It's nice to see someone who has so much fun training with their horse, that's what it should be about rather than just focusing on the end result. ;D My OH will be cursing though, I've been on at him for ages to make me and Star a see-saw

Forgot to say..... stybba, if you want some practice working at liberty before you take the honey monster in the school then you're more than welcome to come and practise with William who's more than ameniable to do virtually anything for a treat! *runs off laughing* ;D ;D

Emma I used to think you were such a nice person! ;D ;D Poor William, he gets such a bad press. I think you need to give him more hugs and snogs Emma, he is obviously just misunderstood. ;D

Tess you are fabulous! I have only watched a couple so far, but this one was truly delightful! www.youtube.com/watch?v=UhILKhjcugY&feature=channel_pageIts truly humbling to watch. I thought Tommy and I had had a massive breakthrough last night just getting him to stand still on his own for one whole minute (I swear that horse has ADHD)! Looks like we still have a fair old road to travel untill I can consider him 'clicker trained'! Thanks again Tess, you are a star! ;D

Brilliant, the pony on the left was so relaxed he looked like he was nodding off. We have been giving one of ours a treat every time he comes in or goes out. I give it to him as soon as I shut the gate and as soon as we reach the place he is tied up on the yard. I think this has helped with his tanking off which he hasn't done in months. He is very food orientated so an ideal candidate I think for clicker training. Do you use the clicker when doing every day handling.

Tess you are fabulous!Woah there girlie – it’s not me doing the clickering – I only put the link up!! ;D But thank you for your kind comments, and I am so glad that you and others are enjoying the clips. The clip with the cone and hoops is so funny – it really makes me laugh – and I love the way the personalities of the ponies seem to show themselves – I do think the smaller pony (Fjord maybe?) looks thoroughly fed up with the haflinger at times!! And the haflinger looks like such a cheeky chappie! I agree with you completely though about how good this sort of stuff is to watch – I think these ponies show great emotional self-control and perseverance. I also like the way the trainer is so careful about treat delivery – especially when the smaller pony gets confused about where her treat is being delivered and has to work her way back down the trainer’s arm – I like the way she keeps her arm extended and doesn’t try to lure the pony back. And as the training progresses, she is getting an impressive amount of behaviours on a single click. The haflinger does show a bit of frustration over treat delivery at one stage as well – but she obviously knows she’s confused him and takes care not to do it again. The thing I like about watching these clips is the honesty – the camera keeps running even when things go pear-shaped!! And as far Tommy’s progress – well it sounds to me like you did have a great breakthrough with him last night if he is standing still for a whole minute – sometimes the hardest behaviour to get is ‘stand still and do NOTHING’ – especially with a horse that always wants to do SOMETHING! And I learnt a long time ago to only measure my progress, and my animals’ progress, by comparing what we can do today with what we could do yesterday, last week, last month and last year – never by what anyone else is doing – so don’t be humbled by looking at other people’s work - just be inspired!! Tess x

Do you use the clicker when doing every day handling. I use it for any situation where I need to communicate/teach something. That includes ridden and ground work. It also explains why my pockets are always bulging with High Fibre nuts! (not so great when a few accidentally go through the washing machine with the jacket! ) I have also given up carrying a clicker, as I just do a click with my tongue now. Its much easier to do it that way when you are lungeing/riding/etc.
