Well said Catrin and Minsmith I couldn't have wrote it better. I loved the whole thing and felt that all the demos tried to please as many people as possible being either horsey or non horsey spectors. I think if you go with an open mind you will hear what is being spoken and just enjoy the whole experience. There are always hiccups, and I think that when things did go wrong they were deal with as quickly as possible and very great integrity. I say well done for a great season of demos and long shall they live!!!

If anyone needs to understand more about how to use plastic bags, or why there are two people in the pen working with the horse, then have a look at Gentling the Spooky Horse here www.youtube.com/watch?v=dC_15etNe7U

I would agree that in a demos such as these there just can't be sufficient educational content to facilitate someone attending it to go home and try out one or all of the methods demonstrated without further study or help ! I think however that the demos is designed to get people interested enough to follow through ...... although I can't remember if that was actually stressed ... ie that total beginers ( and there were some in the audiences) need more help and that horses react in different ways then those seen in the demos situations ..... and one would need to be aware and think about the consequences. Thats one of the problems with demos , it can be made to look too simple ...... sometimes it it , but sometimes it isn't I would define the level of education as " facilitating awareness" ( I am also involved in teaching and learning ) rather than being truly educational ... .. but here we go again ;D getting involved in definitions as I said before ....... hard to pitch demos to cater for such a wide variety of experiences in the audience and have everyone leave having learned something and in a sphere where experiential learning is truly the best way to go ... one just cannot do it in such huge numbers !

The thing is, at a demo, you have a huge number of people at different levels of experience. Some will have worked with young horses (so it might be better to say 'Like most young horses this one is spooky, and this is my desensitisation method) and some (like most people at the local RC) will never have done anything to improve any horse they have ever had or ridden (so you might say 'leaving a horse spooky is dangerous - you should work to desensitise the horse. You ain't EVER going to get it right for all of them - never, ever.

This tour has been fantastic i have enjoyed every second been with the tour team at the 4 venues i have been helping at.. Hopefully i will be able to get time off at home for the next tours and help out at as many as i can.. Sunday was fun at Myserscough and a real downer for been the last demo of the tour but won't be long until the next tour next year.. "PIE" seemed to cope ok Kelly and he loved every minuite of the tour he deffinatly deserves a rest now though so do you K.. Archie was brilliant also i always have had a facination in western horses & riding and it was great to see Monty in the saddle.. Fire was amazing also would put him in the back of my horse box anyday, for him only been riding 4 months he is well on the way to be a great painted western horse...
Keep up the great work Kelly and do keep intouch..

I really enjoyed the Sunday demo. Thought it was great to get a more riding based demo. Having seen Join up done twice before, it was nice to get a little bit of what's next. Though Archie and Monty were fantastic, as was Pie and Kelly. Most entertaining moment was when monty nearly fed Archie from his hand, the said Oh I'm not allowed to do that am I, and put it back on his stick. Loved it. ;D

Hello,
Jinglejoys...... from one mule person to another.... I have PM'd you.
:-)
I think I may be the person to whom you referred in your post reporting the Hartpury demo along the lines of "a lady at Hartpury demo who's just imported a mule whom you'd like to have talked to".... Well unless someone else is a mad as I am then that must have been me - Moon the mule arrived in the UK two weeks ago from Ohio. :-) And always happy to chat mules, naturally. Although Moon is my first one....

I was at the Sunday afternoon demo at myerscough and this was my first Monty demo ever, and i have to say i was thoroughly entertained and in some parts educated, the riding demos Pie and Archie were great. The Spooky horse was a little disappointing for me, as i have to say i was expecting a demonstration of join up on an unbacked horse etc and the horse wasn't particularly spooky, and the change in him was not dramatic, but i suppose you do have to work with what you have got and some days will work better than others. I noticed on the posts that they still required horses for Sunday quite late on as it was an additional date so i suppose you take what you can get. i have to say i had a lump in my throat at the end when the dressage horse who was scared of clapping came out and was good as gold now really was something.
