I'm going to Gleneagle next month so I'll make some notes and post when I get back... have been there a couple of years ago and watched Monty deal with problems including a serial bucker, very educational, and I came away feeling very inspired about working with problem horses.. bringing hubby this time, will update then..

Kelly Marks and Monty Roberts demo at Rodbaston.
I have been to see Monty and Kelly demos previously and I have been very interested to watch them working with various horses helping them over come problems or progressing or backing them. Although it has been good to watch them work it has always been a limited experience for me, as I do not have may own horse and I do not work with horses that have problems to overcome. So I had come to the conclusion that maybe I would not go to many other demos by them until I was in a position that I could maybe capitalise on what I learned.
But of cause this all went out the window because the new tour is different, it includes Monty and Kelly both riding, and this is something I am interested in. Many people fail to realise that Monty Roberts rides (although if you have the original Join Up video you would have seen him demonstrating his skills at reining and cutting).
The demo started with Kelly and Monty working with an unbacked horse in the IH members demo. Rather than going the whole hog and saddling and riding it, they did more preparation work with it, working towards putting a roller on and long lining it. The main reason for this was that the horse was 3 and we are heading for winter so the owner was not ready to ride the horse until next spring (with the benefit of a bit more age and improving weather). The horse worked well and was happy to accept the roller with out problem (no bucking at all), and was able to be controlled by long line and backup.
The second horse was a large grey who was quite spooky. Monty went to work with plastic bags on a stick, working towards the horse trusting him and accepting him as a safe being to be with. He then removed the horse from the round pen while a plastic “Lake” was set up. He then worked with the horse until it was happy to walk on the large plastic sheet with out problem. All the time Monty was very informative about what he was doing and how he was working towards the horse being happy to trust him and over come its fears with out stressing it or intimidating it.
The last part of the first half was Kelly and Pie’s time. For any one not familiar with the Pie story, Pie was not the best horse when she got him, he bucked people off, he was afraid and spooky, and generally not a suitable riding horse, but she worked with him and he has become the horse we saw, confidant, controllable and willing to work with a rider. They set up a selection of things you might meet in a BHS trek competition and demonstrated what fun the got up to.
During the break the round pen was taken away and it was Monty’s turn to ride. He rides in the same way he talks – clam and quiet but getting the point over in a concise way. I take western reining lessons so it was interesting to watch him performing the various things that would make up a reining test. Monty ran though various aspects of what he did, together with using a variety of bits and bridals to show that the horse was not reliant on having a bit or being ridden in a single way. He was joined by Kelly and Pie and they did some half passes and other dressage type things showing that it does not matter if the horse is tacked and trained for western or English, it is still able to be controlled to the same degree with the minimum of force – well no force at all. I do wish that English rider would try western reining, it is a very interesting experience and I feel it has helped me relax as a rider.
Finally we has a horse that did not load. This horse looked to be a real handful, I did wonder how he was going to achieve the loading in 20 minutes. But he did, it was amazing to see the horse walk in with out even a lead rope on. Monty said that in all his time working with loaders this was one horse that had made one of the biggest changes he had seen. And from the few demos I have seen I would agree.
If you have been to a Monty Roberts demo before and thought you had seen enough then I urge you to consider going to see this tour, the ridden parts of the demo, for me, added a whole new dimension to his work, and if I am a half as good rider when I am his age I will be very happy.

And to answer the questions: how you enjoyed it? I enjoyed it alot, more that seeing previous Monty/Kelly demos What were the most educational bits? hard to say, probably the de-spooking demo, although watching all the riding was good too. The most entertaining bits? Kelly and Pie What would you like more of? Monty talked of Join up from horse back, but I did not quite understand how you would start working towards this. Less of? Not sure... Was there anything you didn't understand or we could do better? As above - join up from horse back Is what we are showing of benefit to you and your horses do you feel? I do not have my own horse but probably would be if I had one Do you feel 'inspired' in any way?! Yes, need my western RI to get back from Texas so I can go and see her again.

Hi all, I am going to the last demo to see monty. The one in Myerscough. I cannot wait. There are 5 of us going so it will be a packed car. Can anyone tell me if you get seats and if so am I right by asking are they first in first to get the best position? Never been to a monty demo before. So sorry if I sound dumb! All 5 of us ride horses, and are all horse mad. We all cannot wait for it and any tips on what to expect would be appreciated. Thanks. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Melissa ;D

Hi Melissa, Yes, the seats fill as you arrive so best to get there early. Top tip would be to wear loads and loads of layers of clothes as the demos can get very cold. If you wear too much, you can always take some off ! You will have a brilliant time. If you put a message up the night before the demo, you will probably arrange to meet some Dgers at the same venue. We don't do red carnations in the breast pocket - we do ' baler twine' made into a bow to recognise each other !! hehe Anyway have a fab time, Its something you will never forget.

went toarena uk 3rd demo and quite different with kelly and monty doing some riding, really enjoyed it, the emotion in montys voice when he was speaking brought tears to my eyes, my daughter queed to see pie, he was sooooo enjoying all the fuss, one thing i wish would be made clear at demos is the fact that the work on the night is step 1 on the ladder and in some cases it takes months of patience and ground work to get lasting results. i am always amazed and inspired by them both keep up the excellent work it must be very tiring on tour.

Wow! I'm a new member and have been a supporter of intelligent horsemanship since reading Monty's books. I thought the demo (last night at Bishop Burton) was so informative, interesting, fascinating and really incredible. Monty and Kelly made it all look so easy and I'm definately, definately going to read Kelly's books and watch the dvds and get myself on the courses next year. It was great to get Monty's book signed by the man himself and shake his hand! Loved it.

Hi all Went to Bishop Burton in Hull last night and all I can say is WOW. What an absolutely brilliant evening. We started off with Kelly giving a brief background of how she and Monty met and letting us know what we were in for. Monty came in and I had tears in my eyes. "Holy Moly" I so respect that man!!! First up was a rather pretty palomino with 4 whites called Sox. The lady who owned him had bought him as a very nervous yearling and he was still a "fraidy cat" at 3. He was a plastic bag phobic. Monty demonstrated how the slightest hint of plastic would sent him into a blind panic. Even a tiny rolled up plastic bag on a stick had him literally (you could see it) trembling with fear. Needless to say, by the time Monty had finished, he was walking over tarps like they didnt exist. Next up was kelly and the lovely Pie. they gave a demo on TREC and showed some of the stuff that could be done. The best bit was the final "competition" where Kelly had to do a gate, get a glass of water stand on a see saw bridge whilst drinking the water and then jump some tubes and push a ball off a tarp then walk on it. Well Pie certainly has a sense of fun. He waited till Kelly had the glass to her lips then put his weight on the end of the see saw which basically pushed Kelly's nose right into the glass. he jumped the tubes then he jumped the smoke from the smoke machine!!! Hilarious, he was obviously enjoying himself immensely and he played with the ball even though he had finished!! I'm not going to tell you about the spectacular start and finish to Kelly's demo, i don't want to spoil it, but it isn't to be missed. After the interval Monty came in on the stunning Archie. As Monty rode during the demonstration, you could see exactly why he had become champion so many times. Despite what you said Monty, you're no Has Been!!! I only wish i could ride one 10th as well. there was a nice young horse called Fire ridden by Carl. Again, not going to spoil it. All us dressage riders turn our noses up at these western trained horses. Think again! The loader was Thor. A huge beast of a horse who took 3 people 3 hours to load. Luckily it was stabled there or we would have been deprived of Monty's genius! Needless to say, Thor loaded and loaded and loaded and loaded his owner!!! An all round entertaining and enlightening evening. Monty's inimitable and witty commentary was a paramount of excellence and the interaction between Kelly and Monty was faultless. I even became a member. Kelly, if you read this, report as promised, I only wish it could have been my horse in the demo. He won't stand to be mounted and spooks for Spain (he's andalucian). And the photo didn't come out well, you were all blurred - well it was late. An self indulgent pic. Me and my mate Monty. - THANKS FOR THE INSPIRATION. By the way, I had three jumpers and a Gillet on, Honest.

Following on from paganambers report and already a member we got into the private audience! An absolutely gorgeous 2 1/2 year old colt(?) from Co. Durham.(Correction......from Pocklington!!) Harry (King Henry?) was a Welsh/Quarter horse cross and what a beauty!! Kelly worked with him the aim being to introduce him to the long lines in preparation for ridden work when he is older. He was a very distracted boy and Kelly had to work hard to keep his attention. He needed a hand to get the hang of going where he was being asked on the long lines and it was great to see Kelly working patiently and quietly and working at his pace. Kelly decided to enlist one of the crew to lead him to help him to begin to understand her cues and it was great to see things begin to 'click' for him. I particularly found this educational as things with Harry weren't text book and Kelly clearly showed that staying calm and making things easy for the horse is a low stress way for both horse and handler. The one bad thing......a shortage of toilets!! Monty riding was great/fantastic to see and we got to stroke Pie!!!!! ;D I liked the changes in this demo working with dually as another option to formal 'join up' and the tasters of tack options modelled by Archie which I'm sure will sow seeds in many heads.

I was also at Bishop Burton and the young pony that Kelly worked with was by my stallion - he was actually called George and I agree he wasn't text book - but it was his first time away from home ever. So thought he did well in the circumstances.

So thought he did well in the circumstances. I'm so sorry to get Georges name wrong. . I apologise sincerely for that. Yes I think he did very well, he had had a long journey and it was said it was his first time away from home which I forgot to mention. I didn't mean to cause any offense I was trying to describe what I saw.

No offence taken. I think George did cope very well even loading up at 11.30 at night when he thought he had gone to bed!!!! But I am led to believe that after a good lie in on Sunday morning back at Pocklington he was fine.
