Casper's message on p5 - I think that is what's happened to my boy. My OH says the amount of TS that my horse had should not make any difference tbh. Our paddocks are saturated with loads of surface water on top and when he's been paddling in that all day (he hates it) I am guessing its similar to us when we have a long bath and our skin goes soft? I think the sodden ground may have made his feet sensitive.... my YO said I should just put shoes on him - lol I don't know much about being barefoot but his feet have always been great since I took his shoes off; i am presuming this is just another woe of winter... but obviously its got to be monitored

I think it is a woe of winter, my horse has gone footy since her last trim when ridden over stones

Mia was as obnoxious to the horse next door as usual today so I think it's more her lovely personality than the TopSpec ;D Though she has stopped sh*t stirring and winding fatty up for entertainment so there's been one small improvement.

I used top spec feed balancer on my two, and my older boy (24) has the conditioning flakes and he's never look better!
There are various feeds I have tried mine on that just don't suit and it's the same with lots of horses .. what is good for one isn't good for another and it's a case of trial and error until you find the feed that most suits your horse.

Cocky has the feed balancer and super conditioning flakes with alfa a (dengie) and alfabeet, Libs has the feed balancer with alfabeet and alfa a, Libs is in really good condition at the moment (tb) but usually drops her condition in march/april time so I will try her on the cool conditioning cubes then. My friend has her anglo arab on the cool condition cubes and feed balancer along with the alfa a and alfa beet and she is a very poor doer (even more so than Cocky at 24 yrs old) and she's been holding her weight very very well.
eta - I was feeding Libs on calm & condition ... but horses broke into feed room and Cocky ended up with choke and I suffered a nice £510 vets bill as it was so bad .. so I no longer feed it now!

hi all, just a quick update. not been on much due to internet problems.
after apearing to become almost 100% ok, things have become much worse for B. he became very lame over thursday/friday night last week with very strong digital pulses and warm hooves, by saturday morning he was in extreme pain and could barely walk. the vet was called and he was given anti inflammatories etc. he's now on total box rest with an uncertain outlook. he has improved drastically since saturday but still not out of the woods. vet said if he hadn't recovered in 4 or 5 days i've to call them back out, so starting to look likely i will have too.

Oh, donny, that's awful Poor ned. What's caused it, do you think? Mine is also slightly footsore, having made an almost complete recovery.....he's not so sore that he didn't want to tear about everywhere at trot even on tarmac, but he is finding tight turns difficult. In our case I think it's due to a spate of nice weather and all the bl00dy old biddies in the village who feel sorry for the poor horsie with no grass, and who are rude and stupid enough to come into my garden to feed my horses over the gate!!!! We caught one of them at it, and the fact that JJ's been nipping and both of the neds have had horrid droppings suggests that they've been fed quite a lot of sugary rubbish over CHristmas Grrrrr.

Funnily enough my mare has been over excitable and moody towards other horses and i have changed her onto top spec, maybe will leave it out of her feed and see how we go.

let us know how you get on caustic. i had been wondering if the wet weather could cause the foot problems we've been having but that doesn't explain the psychotic episode we went through a few weeks ago. perhaps it could be a bit of both. for what its worth the vet did comment on how good the condition of his feet were in.
finn i know the hell your going through, we regularly get passers by giving the horses all sorts of nonsense! from loafs of bread to sunday leftovers and potato peelings, i've seen it all and threatened a few with extortionate vets bills haha!. i've had to put a notice up on B's stable door too because well meaning people keep giving him mints and carrots and other nonsense! arghhhh!

It's a pain, isn't it? What I'm wondering is if some damage was done to the feet by reaction to the TS, then given it can take some time to repair, it's quite likely even a small trigger mght be enough to start up another attack since the feet are already compromised. I don't know if Aloe Vera Juice would help bring the imflammation down--it seems to have helped JJ anyway (from Holland and Barrats, 150ml per day!). Mine doesn't seem too bad now--he's desperate to go out, anyway, and was exceedingly cross this morning when he wasn't allowed to!

update from me. Dolce is behaving fine under saddle, but is biting really badly (she was too fast for me one time and I have bruises through 4 layers of clothing). I am going to try some ground work, in case it's behaviour that built up through having a sore tummy, and am also trying oestress along with the top spec calmer. I would consider giving magox, but, having had it before for the other 2, I knpw its a gritty stuff that D would not touch. She is terrible to feed, wont eat a lot and leaves anything powdery, so I am having to add a tiny bit of sugarbeet (our yard only have the mollassed one) to make it palatable. The next step would be to cut out the TS antilam, but what to feed instead?? she needs pelleted feeds or it will be wasted. are there any other pelleted feed balancers out there??

Mag Ox is just white powder--it's calmag that's gritty and pink! Have you tried mixing it up with grated carrot instead of the beet? THat works pretty well Well, we had a hideously windy day today and JJ was perfectly good natured, so I can no longer blame the bad weather that also coincided with his aggressive episode. He's definately better off the TS but to be honest I'm terrified to try him on anything else now he's nearly sound again. The stealth feeders have been fenced off and nasty notices have been put up! I don't know what to do about feed balancers / vit supplements now either, Nich. JJ's better on non-pelleted feeds (has been known to crib!!!!) so I've more to choose from but I'm dread them doing more harm than good now

oh sorry Finn- you are right I had the pink gritty stuff. But I've tried Dolce on 'cool calm and collected', that is like white flour, and she wouldn't have it. I used grated carrot when i had to get coligone into her, but worry about the sugar levels in them too. I have done a bit of ground work with her - yesterday - and she was less aggressive today. but have also given the TS calmer and oestress so am not sure I can make any assumptions about her behaviour! she was pretty good schooling today apart from a massive spook by some jump wings.

I'm lucky I think--mine's not all that picky! He's probably eat flour if he could. I've had to resort to allowing him one small grated carrot and a handful of dried mint a day just to get the beet pulp into him though--he drew the line at that flavoured with mag ox and aloe vera!
We had a huge spook too--kids on skates!!!! I don't think he'd ever seen them before. Still, at least he feels sound enough to trot home sideways snorting in protest, which is a sort of improvement....think I might have to take him down the skate park next week so he can figure out what's going on!
