Lady has been on 15mg of magnitude for a week now and once she has settled I will be trying to reduce the dose though very slowly, no sign at all of runny poos and bearing in mind she is nearly 600kg, weight to dose ratio probably isn't as high as it sounds,

Im sure its something like 3g per 100g of body weight so thats prob about rite I assume you mean gram not mg? Is the magnitude pure? Glad she is doing well and appologies I thought you meant 3 times that dose lol. Im sure someone said that the dose instructions on magnitude is wrong its only half of what it should be but dont quote me on that I cant be sure as Iv never bought it or even read the tub

Don't worry all opinions welcome sometimes it's better for someone to query what you're doing, I tend to look again in case I've made a boob, as I did with mg not g lol. I didn't think Magnitude was pure but have just checked the label and the only ingredient listed is magnesium, their recommended dose is 5gms for 500kg horse so the theory about the dose being wrong seems to ring true, I've just had a read on barefoot basics and they reckon 4gms per 100kg of pure magnesium, which is a huge differance, and more in line with what she is getting, I'll carry on using what I've got but at the rate she's getting through it I've ordered some pure mag-heavy, I'm hoping once she settles I can reduce it a bit, it's just nice to have her calmer, she even let OH give her a mint today, progress indeed, she's not his biggest fan!!!!!!!!!

It obviously wasn't meant to be. Jim Goddard was due to come out on Thursday morning but texted to say he felt the weather would be a hinderance so at the moment I'm waiting to hear when he can come out though I know it's not until after 12th though the way things are going that could be 12th of Jan or Feb, still Lady is getting braver though and today OH gave her a carrot without me being there which is a first.

Well, in the absence of Jim, I have been in touch and have now seen some videos of the (totally gorgeous!) Lady. What immediately struck me is her back, which is quite lordotic. I'm afraid I don't buy the line of the vet who explained that this was because she'd had 2 or 3 foals. To me it's more likely to have its root in poor tack or riding and/or ulcers or similar. All pre- current ownership, I hasten to add.
As well as suggesting a physio/chiro/osteopath for a proper check and hopefully some exercises to raise and strengthen her back, I've also explained some groundwork that will help the general relationship, and I hope this should help fairly quickly.
I have to say, though, that Lady looks like she's just dying to be able to let herself go into a dirty great big cuddle, but that she just can't quite bring herself to do that. I have high hopes that, if she can be made to feel better, she'll turn out to be a true gem of a friend. So keep those fingers crossed, everyone!

It has already been a huge boost having Liz helping though I must say after hardly sleeping last night worrying about 'the videos' I already feel so much more relaxed and positive especially as I find Liz very straight and to the point but so easy to talk to and learn from. Lady has been improving steadily but it's obvious that I haven't been giving her the correct answers but another thing I found re-assurring was that though I don't feel horses are naturally nasty I have always felt that Lady is a very gentle soul with the capacity for a great deal of love, interaction whatever you choose to call it and was so pleased that Liz saw that and I hadn't just dreamed it. You never know once her back is checked and I get a confidence injection, or several I may even ride her again.

It sounds to me like you have the tentative beginnings of a massive bond with a mare who obviously has learned that humans aren't very trustworthy (until now) Maybe the mag did the trick, maybe the AC planted the seeds that day too - who knows, and who cares?! Onwards and upwards for you both! And top marks for you Liz too - what a gem you are

Awww... thank you both.
I'm afraid I do have to disagree with you, ladyndibs. I think she's gorgeous, a beautiful face and a beautiful soul. She just needs a beautiful back to match!
The latest videos look a great improvement already. More work to come and more improvement to come, but already definitely on the right track.
I obviously can't rule out any effect of magnesium, but my feeling is that this is really a mixture of discomfort and uncertainty from Lady, mixed with a lack of clarity in the communications dept. There's now much more body language talking going on and Lady is understanding that she's being listened to as well as shown what is wanted. So for me the credit goes to ladyndibs for the hard work she's putting in.

Since having Lady we have gone through phases where she's walked away before I've even got close to her through to her walking down to greet me which at times is over 200yds. Because I felt Lady had got to know me I'd stopped doing a lot of the meet and greet that I used to do. When things didn't go right I felt there was something wrong with Lady, when all the time it was me, having received help from Liz I have begun to correct what can only be described as very bad manners towards my horse. In just a week I have seen a huge improvement, one thing Liz did say about Lady and her headcollar issue was that before long she would be seeking out her head collar, there has been only tiny movement but her nose has definately gone towards it a few times already and though she didn't walk all the way to the gate she came part way to meet me today and didn't take a single step away from me. ;D ;D ;D ;D Christmas has come early this year. ps back lady coming out first week of Jan

I love horses with 'baggage' the best - they're communicating in a way that really makes us think...and think...and think! Often they've been very misunderstood, and then they find somebody patient who tries hard, gets stuck, gets help, has light-bulb moments, then revelations... and ends up with such a deep & special bond with human & horse - how utterly fantastic is that? Maybe her full name should be Lucky Lady

Lucky Lady? I'd like to hope she'll think so one day, and of course the added bonus is my other two horses though not having the confidence issues Lady has and being nosey arabs are gaining from it too.

Please don't beat yourself up about allowing things to slip. It happens to us all. It's just so easy to get complacent about relationships - any relationships - and I think we all need to make the time to stand back every so often and have an honest look how things are going. That goes for our relationships with our families, friends, horses, dogs, and, in my case, chickens!
And I'm pleased to hear the effect is spreading across the board - peace and harmony at Christmas time! And on into the new year....
;D
