Hi, Christmas eve my shettie x looked like she had mild colic , off feed, head lowered, breathing short and fast. I brought her in, gave her just water and she was checked on through out the night. Christmas day she seemed better, pooping, weeing, drunk a little water but breathing was not as bad but still not quite right . Today, she seemed more with it, turned her out and she laid down at the paddock gate , got her up, walked her around the paddock and then she went off and grazed, she laid down on and off through out the day. Brought her back in about 3.30pm, gave her a good groom, breathing is normal, but..... no interest in food, still pooping and weeing (not as many poo's as usual, but, she's not really eating) Left her in, but she will be checked at 10pm I have had a good look in her mouth thinking it was teeth, couldn't see anything abnormal but will call dentist tomorrow. This pony will eat until she spontaneously con busted, so for her to not eat there is something wrong. Any idea's to what's wrong, she keeps laying down & rolling but she is pooping and weeing. If it was mild colic it would of got better by now, or worse, her routine, feed etc has not changed, unless someone had fed her something over the fence. I've spent all Xmas worrying, I've had her 3 1/2 years, she's never been sick or sorry, she's such a little minx, boss of the field and food. I just want her better and back to her bossy self lol Come on guy's, rack your brains please P.S I hope you all had a good Christmas, and I wish you a happy new year Many thanks Em x ;D

Poor you and poor pony, could it be by any chance laminitis, my section D had very similar symptoms. Really do hope you find out what is wrong.

I have to admit that I would have got the vet out Christmas eve if that was one of my horses. Get the vet out.

Hi, I'm 99 % sure it's not lami, they are only on hay, they have a bale a day between 4 of them, the other 3 have a feed once a day, she has a token feed of a handfull of speedie beat, and a handfull of chaff, sometimes carrots and apples, but not often. She had a grazing muzzle on over spring/summer because she over ate, but luck had it, the only side affect she had was that she could not move, but after the muzzle was on she was fine within 24hrs. It's just really bugging me as she is not running a tempreture, no runny nose or cough etc.... I did wonder if she had a slight chill, but no shivering etc..... aaarrrggghhh

sounds certainly summat causing her pain if she not eating ...... although you said she did graze for a bit ... maybe if grass easier to eat than hay or hard feed them maybe it is indeed pin in her mouth even if you can tsee anything ........ abcess ?? ( I can empathise with mouth pain and not eating as per usual ( I been on soft foods over xmas because of new powerchains on braces does she have raised temp / heart rate ? echo vet to tho if breathing rate up ... could even be a resp infection sooo many things to speculate on !!!!!!!!!!!!

Bring her in now. My friend's pony has just died (Christmas Eve) after similiar symptoms. I think it could be related to mycotoxins - in which case she needs to be off grass and fed binders. Her symptons are of poisoning. You need a vet. I am so sorry, and I am so concerned that so many people are having this problem. Hope this one makes it. :'*

thats the trouble when they are up and down like that, there isnt anything definite so cant actually say for sure what is wrong with her? Have you got any bute you can try? I dont know if it is ok for them to have bute if it was colic so perhaps someone can put me right on that one? My Sec A was like that when he had Lami and my other pony was like that when she had a virus so it could be anything really. Frosty grass could cause either as well. Agree with above, i would get the vet out if she isnt any better tommorrow. Have you felt her pulses? Any heat in her feet? did you actually take her temperature? Hope she is ok all the best eileen x

Would also check the colour of her gums, to see whether they are paler than usual or not?

a few days before christmas my cob came in with similar symptoms, lyin down then getting up, off his food, not drinking for ages then downing half a bucket, really tucked up an in pain, high pulse(78-84) and shallow breaths. Feet all the same temp and not hot and no pulses, the next day it was full blown lammi in 3 feet. He is now padded up on box rest and doing well. Just sounded a bit like your symptoms.
I hope your pony is feeling better today and that you have figured out what it is

Hi, her gums look fine, had a good look in her mouth, she has been in since 4pm xmas eve, apart from 4hrs turn out today, which she spent most of it laying down.
She seemed alot more with it when I was grooming her tonight, searching pockets etc, it was only when I stopped grooming her, that she went and stood back in the corner of her stable. I will keep her in tomorrow and phone the vet, I will check the paddock again,
many thanks for your thoughts.
Em

I'm Sorry to sound harsh but Why Oh Why haven't you called the vet when your pony is obviously ill and in discomfort? ?

Could it be chronic grass sickness? What area are you in?
