Had a bit of a "moment" today. Hacking on the roads on Enebro, with friend. Going along a quiet road and I noticed something hanging loose down the side of Enebro's face. Got off to inspect to find the billet hook missing on the cheek-piece Now how this has happened I have no idea. Tis a nearly new bridle and I haven't caught it on anything. Enebro is incredibly light in the hand, so nothing I can think of. But the billet hook was completely missing. All I could do was remove the bit, take the reins off and thread them through his noseband to lead him home. It's my own fault, I haven't checked the bridle thoroughly for a few weeks. Please check your tack everyone. This had a happy, safe, ending but dread to think what could have happened!! xx

Lucky.
Western riders, or anyone who uses western bridles with Chicago screws, check them everytime. They are even more likely to come loose than billets or buckles.
As billet hooks are banned in racing I haven't used them for years anyway, always hated them, but never had any accidents with them coming apart when I did use them.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to check stirrups please? I have had two (less than a year old, and not from the same pair) stainless steel ones snap on separate occasions.

I attached a long boot lace to my saddle so that I could hopefully use it in an emergency if anything broke, but that never actually happened. However, before that, my hackamore noseband broke whilst out on a sponsoed ride, in canter, in company. That was a litle hairy, so I decided to carry some emergency kit after that!

it could be that the billet wasnt put on properly in the first place... and just fell off with the pressure.... take bridle back to where you bought it, an ask for a new one. do you have the receipt?
