What a good boy Enebro is I was on a sponsored ride once, jumped over a big 3ft log and my stirrup leather broke on the way over! Managed to tie it in a knot but went the last 6 miles with jockey length leathers. Now I always check the thread at the top of the leathers by the buckle and keep a spare leather around my waist on a long ride. Thanks for the reminder wozzer, haven't checked my bridles for a while xx

I do tack checks at Pony Club XC events. You would be surprised at how many people send their children out to go XC with dodgy stirrup leather stitching, reins almost worn through by martingale rings. Some tack looks like a bargain but it isnt--shoddy workmanship and inadequate curing of the leather. Take care out there.

Only yesterday a lady on our yard was trying on a saddle which someone had said she could borrow, if it fitted, untill her new one arrived. She tightened the girth up just enough to keep the saddle on the horses back to see how it sat.....and two of the girth tabs snapped off the webbing !! This wasn't an old/foreign/cheap saddle at all , it was a well known english make that anyone would recognise as being top quality , it just hadn't been properly looked after and therefore was a death trap waiting to happen !

i was riding back from a XC session once (hacked up), and the girl i was with said lets swap horses. she wanted to ride mine back. so i said ok. we mainly walked and had a little trot and then she said come on, have a canter. so we did. next thing - the right rein on the horse i was on snapped!? i was cantering along with one rein - on a horse i didnt know. wonderful. luckily he stopped without too much of a problem but it was a bit scary.
i wouldnt be happy if my bridle broke though!? i'd take it back.

Thanks for that tip rj - going to get me a boot lace to tie to the D rings on both saddles - would come in handy for all sorts! (And obviously going to check my tack more often too). xx

Thanks for the reminder - I, like many others, don't check my tack as often as I should.
I do however, keep a spare bridle and other bits and pieces (girths, reins) in the crew car when I'm doing Endurance in case of breakages.

Oh eek wozzer how scary, definately take the blooming thing back!
Its a real wake up call when these things happen, I was riding Perdy through a woods near an army base many years ago when a gun went off near by, she shot forward on the path we were on but looking into the distance, a branch hooked up under her cheek piece and ping it just snapped! Being a bloody arab she decided to take the oppurtunity to bog off and i vaguely remember tearing along bridle paths, hoping that the gate into woods would be shut, she did stop well before the gate in the end at the end of a lovely canter track, looking really chuffed with herself!! i rode her home with a bootlace fix!!

Guess what? I was out in the woods doing acrobatics on the Haffy and his rein broke! AND I had checked it, newish reins, the buckle actually split in half. So I pinched one of the other horses 8' split reins....useful things those. Fergus on one of his rare earth bound moments, he was feeling fresh today!

I love the idea of the bootlace. Will find some spares in cupboard. I check the tack every week. I was with a 15 yr old girl once and she wanted to do this jump that was on the track. So she went over it and the next thing was as she landed the reins broke. Was she lucky! The pony she was riding for a friend just stopped. She had to tie it around the bit and secure in a knot. Ok, so she had short reins. But at least she was not hurt. So do check tack. Also take it apart every month if poss and clean and oil if needed.

Nickel hook studs can corrode and snap off. I always use SS.
