I have been reading these treads for the last hour or so.
I am at the moment looking for A NEW HORSE 15.2 up wards. Would rather a gelding and not too worried on the colour but would rather not a grey but if the right one came a long ... who knows
I am no light weight (just under 14st) but losing weight slowly.
I have a place in Devon.
Not sure if I would be brave enough to just buy from France a rescue horse.
Would need to know a lot more information on the ins and outs (I would also have to twist OH's arm too)
Sorry to be so undecided.
advise please

Would you be prepared to take one unbroken or only something that had been ridden?

Well, I like your title :-) So far the rescues have gone well I feel. There are a lot of 'heavy' horses who are gnoing for meat in France and for the most recently rescued one (picked up from France on Saturday) Wofford driver rang me when he went to collect him saying what a lovely horse he is. I'll see what is around. Do you have much experience? Back up? Would you take on a young unstarted horse? Visit www.equinesection.com but for the moment we have more info about thos not coming from 88 or 86. There is the cost of transport to take into account, but the logisitcs are getting easier and easier thanks to woffords. Also you could pm squigs and iwillby who have rescued horses similar to what you are describing.

The trait breeds here by the majority have excellant calm temperments and because of the way many are kept (stallions in close proximity to other stallions and mares) it means they are a lot more tolerable.Stallions can be gelded for about 150 euros here, not sure what it is in UK but gelding is not that normal here wnem they are just bred for meat.We collected a Breton mare from dept 41 who is nothing short than angelic around horses, people including children.

I was on the danger list early this morning....
Why are all these horses going to meat over there.
I know Gem and will chat with her some more
I had not really thought of unbroken or broken .... Broken would be better ..
I have broken a few in and have a very large horsey network round me with lots of experience.
I did see one mare which looked really nice on the danger list - just looked again it now says "11 saved France Dept 88 017 is female"
Could not see a size AND its hard to tell by the photo -

She is saved. Look at the 86 (really urgent) and 88 ones, there are more if you like the type, we just haven't had time to put them all up if you can do unbroken I woul go for a youngster, they haven't had time to have a horrid past, it's just the future where they will endure heel before being killed :-(

devongirl62 two weeks ago i wasn,t looking for another horse ny hubby certainly wasn,t thinking about it i believe in fate what will be will be i know in my heart i couldn,t of let him go to slaughter and now he is here it is unbearable to think, i don,t think of him as a saved horse he is one of my gang size doesn,t matter to me when you are 5,10 everything is small these horses i don,t know it is hard to explain they have a dignity they don,t ask very much and give back a thousandfold it never even entered into my head that he might be this huge beast who was uncontrallable i just knew he wasn,t you will never know unless you try

echo iwillbuy - i seriously wasnt looking for another horse as i already have 3 and a young daughter, 3 dogs....+++ and a husband who has only been working for himself for the past year or so........and i am not the most confident!?!? i knew i didnt know what i was getting and just thought oh well....whatever he be i will deal with it, he couldnt be worse than my terror of a new forest!lol anyway he is the most gentle and beautiful horse i have ever known (i can say this as all of mine are ponies!), he is about 16.1 and a gent - i never have regrets about anything as i believe the decisions i make are right at the time....i definately do not regret this decision and i never give up. i feel very privileged. hope all that waffle makes sense.....

from what I have seen of both the trotters and the heavyweight french horses they seem to have very few problems, very gentle and easy going.I would think that you would actually be aswell or better off buying one of these than buying from a dealer or private advert in the uk,buying a horse is always full of pitfalls and this country is full of unscrupulous people trying to sell on a problem horse. So far nobody has had any problems atall with those types and the heavy horses are only going for meat because they weigh a lot and that is the cuture, you dont need to look for another hidden reason.

Well I went across to meet iwillbuy and Jupiter today and all I can say is, wow, what a horse. He is so gentle and noble and very relaxed to say he's only been here a week. Who knows what will happen when he is saddled but nothing about him gives any indication there will be problems. If you can get one like him I doubt you would go far wrong.
As Sarah says, in France going for meat is just a normal ending to a lot of horses lives, they serve their purpose on the farm/in the family etc and when they are no longer needed for whatever reason (probably financial) they get sent for slaughter. Not neccessarily because there is anything wrong.
Good luck whatever you decide (and please don't feel pressured into making a decision you are not sure about just because you feel you should! No one wants that!)
