For some time now ive been thinking about doing dressage with my pony. She has always been very well schooled and from looking at the simpler tests, would most likely perform them well. What i would like to know is what pecific equipment do you need i.e - white numnah? I already have showing things but ive shown in a tweed jacket and i dont know if you can for dressage? Also how to find out where they are held at and which test is the easiest one? Thankyou for any advice/help given!

i have done some very simple dressage test, just prelim tests, eld at a local yard. i completed my test in a tweed jacket, and it was fine. P12 is pretty simple, and was always my fav, as it is very simple!

Thankyou! I need to splash out on some new jodphurs but do you know what numnah you have to wear? Whether you dont have to wear one or it has to be white? At the moment i only have a brown one! Lol

You dont have to have a numnah - and any colour is actually accpeted - although black or white or brown are usual. Tweed is perfectly OK at any level (unless it's top hat and tails level!) Jods / breeches must be white cream or fawn Rules are on www.britishdressage.co.uk - under "library" and then "rule book"

Look out for events organised by a local riding club, which you will probably find advertised in the local tack shops, etc. Also competition centres, indoor schools, etc. hold regular competitions, with the entry fee around £6.00 per class. Prelim tests are the easiest, basically walk trot and canter. Where a movement alters at a letter, eg. trot at A, it is the rider that should be level with the letter.
If it is your first competition just ask the secretary or the collecting ring steward if everything is OK regarding tack and dress. In prelim you can carry a stick and even use a neck strap. I think you should wear gloves. I wear a tweed jacket, white shirt and tie, with cream breeches and long boots. A hat with a dark cover and a hairnet. Check about wearing chaps - what colour, style, etc. is allowed. Although it is quite OK to wear jods and jodpur boots if you are on a pony. Don't get too hung up on the rules, especially at very local events, at the very worst the judge might tell you if something is really wrong.
You should get a tack inspection in the collecting ring, so a snaffle of sorts with either a cavesson, drop or flash noseband is OK. Hope this helps.

Also you must remember the numnah must be plain no pipeing or initials.

I'm doing my first test a week Tuesday too, but i'm borrowing a friends pony instead of riding my own youngster! I'm having to wear joddy boots too, as chaps aren't allowed, and I don't have long boots!

Hi Lucyloo, you could wear chaps if they are the same colour as your boots, black or brown and no fringes etc. Or leather gaiters again same colour as boots. have a great show, good luck best regards

Does anyone know if there are any walk and trot only dressage tests? Canter is not our best pace at the moment when out at a show!

Yes a lot of venues do walk and trot only. That is what I am doing for my first one!
