Drat, I'm going to miss it.
There are a couple of really good books on this subject by Linda Kohanov: The Tao of Equus being the main one and Riding Between Worlds the follow up. As the titles suggest, these are also very spiritual books.
I know there's a centre in Gloucestershire - I'd love to know more about what's happening.

Sorry for sounding uninformed but what exactly is equine assisted psychotherapy. I am a psychology graduate so genuinely interested.

Hi, Hopefully going to catch it if I can tune into it here! But I'm currently offering Equine Assisted Personal Development here which I hope to develop into Equine Assisted Therapy/Psychotherapy within the next 2-3 years as I qualify with my counselling.
It's a hugely interesting and inspiring field in which people learn and develop self esteem, self confidence, problem solving, self awareness etc, etc. through exercises and contact with the horses. This can be very effective on its own, but I will be combining that with individual counselling too, to address deeper issues or problems in conjunction with the horses at the appropriate times.
It's huge in the US and has been for many years as it has proved such a unique and successful field - to the extent of teaching student doctors some 'bedside manners'!
I'm hoping to get the Health Authority and other support groups involved in the future so that we can start to fill the huge gaps in the mental health system in this country and also raise awareness about how amazing these horses are and just how much we can learn from them! :-)x

Who was the programme about Francis? My friend Shuna Shaw is running courses near Oban, with Glasgow psychotherapist Jane Dallas Ross. They are getting some rave reviews from people I've talked to (and I think they're under-charging, but that's another story!).

The one on the website seems to be the previous week's programme. I expect they will update it in due course.

KAS - According to the web page:
"Equine Assisted Therapy Over the past two years STEPPS a rehabilitation treatment centre in Gloucester has been pioneering a novel therapy which, they believe, is particularly effective with patients suffering from addictions, depression and eating disorders. It's called Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and involves working with horses. Raj visited the centre to investigate."

Hi, I missed the radio programme and can't seem to listen to it on my PC Its something I am interested in as I think horses really do teach you a lot and reach you on a soul level. Just wondered while I'm here, if anyone knows of anyone who practices Equine Assisted Therapy in the South East area of England?
