I have been advised that it is likely my mare has a magnesium deficiency and that a calmer may help make her that little bit more rideable.
I was wondering if anyone used them and if so which one? I am looking at feedmarks steady up but thought id see if anyone else on here new of one with a high magnesium base?

Hi Gem, Was your advice an opinion or via bloodtest? (Don't mean that rudely by the way), as if its by bloodtest then at least you know for sure its not money down the drain buying a supplement. If you do search on Magnesium I think some threads will come up as its been discussed on here before a lot. Or do a FAO Jackie A Taylor as I am sure its her that either had the knowledge or even the best product at a good price.
Most calmers in shops do have mag. in them though. and I use top spec calmer and found it works on our new horse.

opinion, my riding instructor no offence taken!! I was uming and ahhing to see whether I should have blood tests but when I phoned my vet he said it was cheaper just to try a calmer and see if it had any effect as by the time i've added call out, examination charge etc to the bill we are looking at about 60/70!! so I thought Id try one and see if there was a difference.
Ill do a search thanks, I looked at top spec but there was no breakdown to say what was in it!

I've got Jaffa on Top Spec Calmer at the moment. He's only been on it two weeks so I haven't noticed much of a difference yet - I think it takes about 4 weeks to get into their system.
I tried using the little sachets of instant calmer from Global herbs - it said to give it 2 hours before riding and you will notice a difference. I did exactly what they said and it made no difference what so ever.
I think their longer term calmer is a bit better but I haven't used it.
I'd be interested to hear what everyone else uses.

I've tried Global Herbs and Top Spec, no difference at all. Sara K with Jo is using SteadyUp with good results I believe. I also tried Rescue Remedy and pure Valerian, no difference!

According to the tub there is magnesium in Top Spec but I can't remember how much. I think I might try something else once my tub has been used up. Is it ok to swap them about??

NAF do one called Magic that really works,it's based on magnesium but has herbs in too. Though you can buy magnesium cheaper from the alternative horse co.

Hi there. ;D I tried Top Spec which didn't have much effect. SteadyUp does keep my boy on a pretty even keel, but I have to say that I've yet to find a calmer which will work when he is having a hissy fit!!!
Let me know how you get on - trouble is now I've started using it I daren't stop! Bit like a sort of insurance policy now!!!

Nupafeed do a calmer. I have used it on my daughters pony with great success. It is a liquid that you put in the feed. You can also get paste which can be given prior to an event. It can only be purchased directly through Nupafeed.

I supply both CalMag and Pure Magnesium Oxide by the kilo if you want to try it.

I use pure magnesium oxide. You can buy it from countrwide stores in a huge back for under £10. You only use about 10ml a day so it will last forever. Its a much cheaper option and because its pure you dont have the other stuff in it that your your might not need and you can control how much you give in a more efficient way. Jackie suggested it for my boy and have to say he is a totally changed character since he has been on it. No more panic attacks!
