Hi Guys, bad news April has a bout of lamnitis I don't know at the moment what has caused it, she hasn't been out on grass for ages, so its not that, its either the simple systems food or batch of horsehage, although she is on the same batch of horsehage, so starting from tomorrow I am cutting out the simple systems feed and will see if she gets better,if not will look at the horsehage she was doing so very well too on this food as well, or seemed to be doing fine on it,if it turns out she can't cope on it, I don't know what I am going to do and what I am going to feed her now,if it turns out she can't cope on it plus I have now got 11 bags of this simple systems food after ordering a big batch of it love Vxxx

My pony's just gone down with laminitis as well, the vet said he's seeing lots of cases at the moment which is unusual for this time of year. It has been a bit springlike at times, leaves still on the trees in places, so maybe it's that. Are you anywhere near Brecon? Rowanoak livery stock Simple Systems, it would save you having to buy pallet loads each time. Their website address is www.rowanoaklivery.co.uk

Hi Mandy, sorry to hear your pony has gone down with it too, my old girl April wasn't out on the grass ,so it wasn't that with her.no thats north wales we are in south west wales, I have a feeling its the simple systems feeds with her or the batch of horsehage,I have stopped the feed today, and she is just having horsehage,so I will soon know which one it is, if turns out to be the simple system feed,I am wondering if I would have to stop it all together,or if I will be able to find a happy level with it that she can cope with?? as it has taken 3 weeks for her to show signs she can't cope on it, maybe once she gets better and if it proves its the simple systems food, she might be able to get away with having tiny bit of it??? love Vxxx

I'm sorry to hear about April, Veronica, she seemed to be doing really well up to now too. Hope you find out what's caused it - I know with Khafif it's quite a balancing act to get everything right. Fingers crossed for a quick recovery. Can she have feed balancers at all? I just wonder whether, if she can take it, giving her Lo Cal or Top Spec anti-lam would help her if she's not already on it? Also, the vet that came out for the referral to Khafif (he looked at her and said, "yes, it's Cushings" - more or less!) said that if 1mg Pergolide doesn't help then I could increase the dose slightly. Can you try that with April? I know she's quite a bit smaller than Khafif so it may be that she's on the highest dose she can take anyway. Good luck with her, Cushings is such a nightmare

Thank you Karon, Aprils on the max of Pergolide, I think that has helped her in I think she would be really bad if she hadn't been on it, also it might have also masked the symptoms, in that if she hadn't been on it ,it might have shown up sooner that she couldn't cope on that food?I don't know yet though if it is the food that has caused it,will give it a couple more days without that food to see if she improves or gets worse will look into that thanks about Lo Cal or Top Spec anti-lam thank you love Vxxx

Hi Karon, just looked that Top Spec anti-lam and if it turns out to be she can't cope on simple systems food she wont cope on that as its the alfalfa in it in why she can't cope on it, so that wont be no good, but thanks for the thought in trying to help love Vxxx

Veronica - just a thought, but it was this time last year that Khafif got laminitis and it seemed to coincide with the days getting really short as much as anything. Once the days got noticeably longer she started to improve. I wonder if April's laminitis is light-related?

Hi Karon, yes thats a good idea but I am more sure today its the food she couldn't cope on as she seems more better tonight since stopping the food, she is not hopping from foot to foot as much, its hardly noticebale tonight, also its not so wet in there with wee too,its a shame she can't cope on it, but if I hadn't have tried that food I would have never known if she could cope on it or not,and I think the reason she can't cope on it is because its alfalfa at the moment she is just having markways blue bag horsehage from doncaster , batch number D26 2B its the only batch of that she can cope with too its a blinking nightmare trying to feed her but at lest she can cope on that its back to the drawing boad on the food front,I need a food with has no alfalfa in it, no sugars, and no startches is there such a food??? ahh well never mind at lest she can have this horsehage thats something Thanks again love Vxxx

Well, at least she's showing signs of getting better already which is good. Can't think of anything that is low sugar except Speedi beet which Khafif seems to cope well with. Can she have HiFi lite? It's really difficult, I know - Khafif's diet has settled on HiFi Lite, Speedi beet and a balancer in winter and she'll be getting pergolide after Xmas - only just got the prescription and don't want to trust the post at the moment.
It is a nightmare, hope you find something she can eat soon.

Brecon isn't in North Wales! LOL I just wanted to make that clear so that other people wouldn't be put off getting SS feeds locally.
I hope your pony's starting to feel better now Veronica.

Thanks guys April is 100% better now,, no karon April can't cope on HiFi lite either but thanks for that thought, my other two are on that. Thanks Brecon Girl , but its 70 miles away from us where this persons got it, so too far for us, it worked out cheaper to order it direct and get it and to get it delivered. I am not knocking simple systems food just saying April can't have it, its a real shame but thats how it goes sometimes anyway she is having ab lib markways horsehage for now till I can work out what else to feed her with but thank you love Vxxx

Hi V and sorry to read April cannot take SS but glad she's better now. Can you return it or exchange it with something she could take (did you try speedibeet or something similar? Am also told by my feed merchant that shredded chicory root - the smaller version of sugarbeet used in diet food industry - can be a good replacement for sugarbeet but I would need to know more about it's actual sugar content vs sugarbeet).
There is definitely something that triggers lami in cushings horses in winter. Jaz is off grass but does get lots of hay and I saw yesterday she had grown a crest again so I'll be soaking her hay a bit longer.
