simple system are looking for stockists in new areas so may reach you soon. Have a look at Hickstead feeds, their chaff if coated with oil instead of molasses.

V, I don't trust Feel Good as they do not publish a precise analysis - you could ask them for one. IMO laminitics and especially Cushing's cases should not be fed oil, apart from maybe a little linseed or linseed oil for omega 3's.
Dengie Hi-Fi Senior is great - I use it instead of Hi-Fi Lite as I do so object to paying for straw! It's only about 7-8% sugar, which should be fine, has no oil, and it is quite soft and tasty. It's not fortified with vits and mins though, so is not a complete feed, just a chaff - half alfalfa and half timothy.
TopSpec have a new safe pellet out, but I don't have full details yet - I think it is designed to be fed with their balancer, just to add 'safe calories' for poor doers rather than being a complete feed.
Dengie do an alfalfa pellet which on the ingredients section says 'Alfalfa' - that's it, period. So as far as I know it contains no nasties, and all mine do fine on it, but I am not sure what it is that April can and cannot take or for what reason - it seems to be other than sugar level or purity.
Why can't she 'take' HiFibre cubes? Is it the eating that's the problem, or her feet?

Hi jackiejataylor,Thank for that info, I want to look at everything for her,she isn't under weight, and she is very well and her coat is very shinny,so don't want to give her anything that will tip her over again her teeth are okay for her age.she does have a good dentist who done a lot of work on her in the summer, if I give her something that she can't cope with she starts to blow, and her feet start to be sore, tips her over edge, its a fine line and I tried high fibre cubes before thats thats what happend I am so intune with her and have looked after her with this condition for so long that I know instintly if she can't have something or can't cope with something I think its sugars and starches? it is hard getting her what she can cope with then you find something that keeps her well ,and I get scared to try anything else,I am going to look at simple system in the hope that I can get it here some how as think this is what she needs any other feeds you can suggest to for me to look into would be great, I am looking at everything before I try her with something Thank you love Vxxx Thanks also Sara, catch up with you soon my friend love Vxxx

TopSpec have a new low starch and sugar pelleted feed to go with their balancers/supplements - that and D&H Safe and Sound are the only two 'calorific feeds' which I know are under 10% combined sugar and starch. Other than that I would stick to Dengie or Simple System unmolassed alfalfa, and unmollased beet.

Hi, I feed one of the old boys at the sanctuary on simple systems, fantastic feeds, I actually managed to get my local feed merchants to get it in for me, not sure how it works in Wales, but it could be worth a try maybe?

Hi V,
I also recommend speaking to Jackie - 2005@metabolichorse.co.uk
Someone that comes on here regularly also has an elderly mare with cushings, and after speaking to Jackie put her on the Vitex Agnus Castus tincture - she has had tremendous results with it & the mare is looking & feeling so much better.
I know how you are feeling as trying to give them the best possible feed to maintain weight, ensure all nutritional needs are being met & not including a load of starch & sugar they don't need is very difficult with so much choice being pushed at us. Fingers crossed for you x

Thank you all, with everyones kind advice and Roo's very kind advice and help in getting this feed to me, I am going to try simple system feeds on her, She is already on a medcation called Pergolide grandmasterflash, but thank you for that advice and info and yes your so very right, its a blinking nightmare with these feed company, they all swear blind that all of their feeds are the best, and all say or we have hardly any sugars in it or startches, but I can't help thinking it would be so much easier on us all with horses and ponies like this if they didn't have any in their feeds at all. I will let you all know how she gets on with this feed once I put her on it Thanks again everyone love Vxxx

There's nothing you can feed without some sugar or starch V - it's naturally in every feedstuff.
But if you speak to a company, demand the actual total sugar and starch figure. We have found that 'safe' means 10% combined total or less. Unmollased beet pulp for instance is 5-8%. Hi-Fi lite is around 5% and Hi-Fi Senior 7 or 8%. TopSpec balancer is 10%, as is their new feed apparently.
If they won't tell you - don't feed it.

Thanks Jackie, have you looked into (studyed) simple systems? what are your views please on the feed? I know this might sound silly but I have noticed, even with horsehage, as even though she has blue bags some bags change substance sometimes, if thats the right word? and if it lookes more green the horsehage she doesn't cope on it as well as if say it looks more yellow the horsehage does that make sense? its different grass's that are used sometimes I think? in the same product its hard because I really know April and know what I know with her but its hard for me to put it in words or make sense in explaining what I have found out in what she can cope with and what she can't and with the hi fi lite don't know if its because its got straw in it she can't cope with or a type of grass in it, or because of the little bit of sugars and starches in it? all I know is how she has been when I have tried it in the past can you also tell me you say Hi-Fi lite is around 5%, if you then soacked that and flushed it out would it be less again? Thank you love Vxxx
