Been very busy today Angel hasnt been so good, though appears to have improved now since I discovered what the problem was. She has had colic attacks two nights on the run, I havent slept since I got up yesterday morning (urgh!) and I didnt get much sleep that night either!! the vet and I were very very concerned and I did think she was going to die but she has steadily improved through the day and this evening was asking for food. The problem, I discovered at 7am, was that the bloke who 'looks after' the old mare (if you remember ive had countless problems with him feeding my horses and going on about getting a rug on this mare who is semi wild) was giving her apples and carrots over the stable door and gave her some mollichop and veteran mix without asking me No wonder the poor pony was so poorly! I am ashamed to say i went absolutely bonkers at him, I have spent hundreds of pounds and HOURS of time already on helping this pony for him to almost kill her and I was FURIOUS! She is up and about and fully comfortable again this evening but cant have any feed til tomorrow and Im having to start again with her feeding, back onto a handful of top spec 6 times a day and cut her haylage back too. So frustrating as shes been doing so well in such a short amount of time. Needless to say Im absolutely exhausted and ready for bed (though of course my son is bouncing about like only toddlers can!) Lets hope things improve again.

I`m not surprised you gave the old man a piece of your mind, even if he thought he was being kind. What a business! I hope Angel will be better by tomorrow. Apparently many of the survivors of the concentration camps died because they were given "normal" food too soon after being starved. Angel must be in a similar condition with her gut, poor thing.
Hope you get some sleep tonight Jo.

I'm so angry to hear this Jo. Well done for having a go at him - I'd have done the same. I remember having a right go at a neighbour who told me I was cruel to put Jubilee in a grazing muzzle and she had had to push polo's and sugar cubes up through the hole in the bottom...WHAT??? no matter what I said about lami, she wouldn't have it that I wasn't being cruel, told me I was talking B**l***ks as Jubs wasn't ill, she said I should treat it if she got it and if it really existed!
How is Angel now? Did her decahedron arrive? If so that would be a good way to let her make her feeds last rather than bolting them down. Good luck with her and if you need a few ideas as to what to do with your interfering neighbour, I'm sure we can all come up with a few!
Take care of yourself and catch some sleep where you can.

Grrr! People are impossible. I've had the girl who helps us feeding my ned sugary and cereal based treats by hand, so not only was he utterly impossible, but he's now mugging and nipping like mad. Fortunately he bit her--quite hard--so she probably won't do it again... Still, hopefully you've sorted the problem out! And good on you

yeah. i hate it when people give ur horses food without consulting you. at my old yard when i had my mare a woman kept feeding her. the woman thought she was being kind giving an excitable 16.2hh TB mare (chestnut) a handfull or two of oats a night. i wondered y my mare had started to drag me to the field again and bolt on rides!!!

Hi Jo R,
I was wondering how ur mare was getting on.....Is this the mare who is in foal????sorry i have a terrible memory, and i may be getting mixed up lol
Im so glad to hear she is improving.....
Im shocked at the sheer audacity of the man feeding ur horse/s....
Im on a very small yard, and we all respect each other and ours horses, a small slice of carrot is acceptable, but nothing more.....
Good Luck, and best wishes with her.....Lv Tray xx

yes she is in foal and arrived chirstmas day out of a back garden still nto had strangles results back for her either, had best pray they are negative as this person also went and touched my stallion and some of my other horses after feeding her out of his hand he is getting the vets bill, an extra 200ish in the last two days Im STILL trying to get him to stop feeding my ponies...he gives them mollichop sugarbeet (mollassed) and some form of mix, NOT what I want them eating....in fact exactly what I HATE to see horses eating. And I swear if I catch one more person feeding my horses carrots and apples over my fences and walls im going to absolutely flip, had to say to a woman for the 20th time today NOT to feed the horses, "its onl carrots" she says...I (probably quite rudely!) pointed out they werent hers and she had no right to feed them anything no matter what it was she was giving them!! Problem is I know she just walks around in circles til I have to leave and feeds them then....it reduces me to tears, seriously.

The man who is feeding her, is this the same man u got her off...... But regardless if it is or isnt, he or anyone else has no right whatsoever in feeding ur horses...
Have u tried making a sign and getting it laminated, saying something like : Please DONT feed horses any food, as this may cause colic....THANK YOU, then put it on ur fence.....
I think most people just dont realise, that if a horse/s is on there walking route and they feed a carrot/apple or 2, if everyone out walking the same route on a nice day was to feed a carrot/apple, then the owner went out riding, it could cause probs for the horse....
But as for this man, he so clearly gave Angel a bucket feed, and as u say not the best choice either......
I truely hope things improve for both of u.....Lv Tray xx

no its not the man I bought her from, i havent heard from him. i did leave a message on his home answerphone telling him she was still alive but to be honest I dont think he really cares, he just sees her as a waste of money. The guy that fed her has been looking after the old mare that belongs to the owners of the land I keep my horses on, he has been looking after her for some time but doesnt know anything about horses except what he has been told from a 'friend that used to own horses' I took over the care of this mare when I moved my horses on the land 2 1/2 years ago, her field companion died of colic (suprise) and I dont want her going the same way.
I have tried the please do not feed signs, they were ignored before being pulled down....
am worried about when Angel does get to go out in a paddock...who knows what people will feed her over the fence because she is skinny??!!
Goodness and what on earth am i still doing awake at this time of night??!!

Good luck with it all - I know how difficult it is I had a YO feeding one of ours inappropriately. I had spent two years and ££££s to get his weird gut sorted when suddenly he started to become dangerous to ride and she was giving him milk pellets to 'fatten him up'. She was a GP dressage rider and , as she said, me a mere novice so I had 'no idea how to look after horses'!!! After the big row we left. Can you move her? Thinking about you and sending good wishes. x
