Just wandering what people think about pulling tails on horses for the show ring and competition. I find it more convient when showing because there is no flapping around with plating the tail and trying to get it perfect. What are you views ?

The horse i do working hunter on we pull her tail. But for my lad, who i dont show, his tail is natural, i just keep it tidy for competitions. My friend clips her horses ttail and it looks fine when first done but then goes like a bog brush!!

Some horses I've come across actually like having it done! I would only do it on a horse who rubbed its tail really badly - I prefer a plaited tail.

My cob used to love being pulled - I only did his mane, but he'd stretch and scrat and curl his lips in ecstasy. I think pulled tails are ugly personally.

Mine all live out so they have unpulled tails - I don't like to think of the cold water running down their bums

I don't like pulled or shaved tails. Much prefer a plaited one. I've had Ginger 2 1/2 years now and his tail only just looks normal cos it was pulled when I got him. Plaiting is a faff but it looks gorgeous and means the horse has a nice full natural tail the rest of the time.

I use a solo comb on the tails now, I used to pull normally (always after exersise) in spring and keep tails neat for showing then let them grow out through winter. I have spent time practising with the solo comb so I can now get beautifully shaped neat tails with it, look just as good as pulled tails and no discomfort at all for the ponies. Infact i usually use a solo comb to do manes now as well, took a while to get used too but now you cant tell the difference between my solo combed manes and my pulled manes. As I show I cant rightly not do something with my SHPs tails, it just wouldnt be professional, but at least doing them with a solo comb doesnt mean its uncomfortable.
I did know someone who pulled the hairs out of the side of her horses tail with pliers!!!!! And I hate it when people clip the whole top of horses tails off, looks ridiculous!

Plait every time, can't stand pulled tails meself, has taken me a year to grow out my twos so far and still not quite right but getting there, i find plaiting really easy and am pretty quick at it so don't have a problem

Pulled tails look far more professional than plaited - go to county shows and count the number of horses that are placed with plaited tails....it won't be high. I used to hate the idea of pulled tails, but I've been around a bit more and have seen lots of horses who do genuinely enjoy having them pulled. I now think a well pulled tail looks absolutely beautiful - the tail swishes like a curtain as the horse moves. I have Fells though - so neither plaited or pulled for me!

I dont do anything to my girls, i dont even cut there manes or tails.....
Breeze suffers with sweet itch, so trying to keep her mane and tail in tact is a job in itself... This yr ive managed to keep full mane and tail on her.....
Im thinking of showing her in hand next yr.....it will be the 1st time ive ever shown, and it will be her 1st show...... Sorry if i sound stupid here, but do i have to pull or plait her mane/tail. Ive only ever been to one small local show, so im a complete novice....Sorry lucyjake dont mean to hi jack ur post, but if anyone will answer Yes/No lol

depends what type she is, is she isnt a native or cob, yes she will need to be plaited ideally.

If shes a D there is no need to plait her (dont you just love natives?!)
