He will try getting through the fence to her and if does he will try to cover her . Today he was going crazy getting right on top of her we ve had to seperate them. Geldings shouldn't do it! A youngster might do it in play or a rig but a gelding should show no interest at all.

mind you, saying that one of my friends geldings mounts the mare in his field but thats more a dominance issue than trying to cover her.

Theres only 3 mares at our yard that go out. Mil is the most flirtacious of them all!! She's still coming into season! She is such a tart when shes in season so have to keep her in a field well away from the geldings reach! She'l stop and squirt when she's within a 10m range of any gelding!!

It is not at all unusual for geldings to mount mares, though less usual for them to achieve full penetration. If he is happy and she is happy, I should think no harm would be done. It is only if he is very rough, or she is unwilling that things might get nasty. When my daughter's pony mare lived here she would pester the life out of our gelding to get him to mount her. It is quite natural after all.. As our vet says, your gender is in every cell of your body, not just in your bits and pieces.

Yup, as rosemaryhannah says. Some geldings do it, some don't. Whether you do anything about it is down to whether any of the owners/horses are bothered, and whether there is a risk of injury.

Two of mine do it, no harm done and the mares do flirt with them!
It does not bother me at all.

I've seen my gelding mount two of my mares on a few occasions. At first I was worried he might be a rig but was reassured by a friend that it is quite common. The mares do tease him something awful sometimes!

It is perfectly "normal" for some geldings to mount mares - there's no harm done, they are just being horses. All the geldings in our herd do it, it just depends on the mare who they let close (well, some of them will let anyone, but some are choosy). A gelding cannot "force" a mare - if the mare is not in season and not ready, they won't even try. It's up to the mare when / if anything happens.
Don't worry, it's OK.
