It is quite common for some geldings to mount mares - some will even penetrate. Depends on the gelding - and on the mare. My gelding mounts mares if turned out with them

Sounds to me like you gelding is in love big time! I had a 13hh gelding many years ago who used to go round with rose coloured glasses on whenever my 16hh mare was around. He'd do his damndest to get on her and she'd stand there squirting at him. No damage was ever done so I didn't bother about it and he gave up after about 6 months.

Our 11hh Romeo (that is, indeed, his name) goes out regular with a 16hh tb x mare. She's a right tart (excuse me) when in season, and the little Romeo is all over her - and she sure don't mind. It's actually a bit heartbreaking to see him trying to mount her with his wedding tackle in full glory, when all he can reach is somewhere between her hind hocks and thighs. (Am I being too graphic? ) There'd be no point in separating them, the mare never kicks and all he does is make a fuss, and apart from this they do seem like a match made in heaven - by someone with a quirky sense of humour . He was gelded as a youngster, and he's not a rig - the mare just provokes him something wicked when in season...

mind you, saying that one of my friends geldings mounts the mare in his field but thats more a dominance issue than trying to cover her. Are you sure about that? I know that mounting in dogs can be related to dominance, but have never heard/read of this in horses.

My mare is out in a mixed herd of 24. In the spring its like an orgy out there. BUT if the mares aren't interested they will not let the geldings near them.

yes a stallion horse will mount a mare when in season or not in season! I can assure you they wont mount unless the mare is receptive. A mare who is pestered by a stallion when not in season is deff not going to be getting up to any thing and will prob be quite violent towards him.

I agree with natalia here - a stallion will not mount a mare unless they are in season - the same goes for dogs, cats etc - it is only humans who do it whenever...

A friend's Highland Pony gelding mounted and penetrated a Fell pony companion mare for many months after he was gelded. The vet confirmed that he was not a rig. The poor little fella used to make himself sore but both seemed quite happy. We have a shire foal that has suckled our Shire gelding since her mother decided enough was enough. He usually stands with a blissful expression on his face and only pulls faces when her teeth connect!

yes a stallion horse will mount a mare when in season or not in season! Not sure if this was in answer to my questioning of dominance mounting? Anyway, it is not normal behaviour for an experienced stallion to mount mares who aren't in season. Inexperienced stallions very quickly learn that is a big no-no. It can happen if the stallion isn't properly socialized - e.g. TB breeding stallions are expected to mount the mare every time, because the decision about breeding readiness is effectively made on the horses' behalf. The usual result of such a mounting is the mare will kick out at the stallion. A very few mares will allow a stallion to mount when they are not in season, but this is rare - I've seen only one mare like that and heard of one other. In any case, mounting is always sexual, and never to do with dominance. Exceptionally a rogue stallion may savage a mare, but again this is outside the normal range of dominance behaviour. Colt foals may mount their dams. This activity, which is usually tolerated, may be driven by early spurts of hormones but is very much normal play behaviour. Obviously this isn't dominance-related either. On the other hand, it isn't unusual for geldings to mount oestrus mares. Usually this is fairly half-hearted, and actual penetration is much rarer. The majority of geldings show no sexual interest in mares at all. Affectionate and/or protective (herding) behaviour is more common.

I feel I have to reply on this, the mare in question is my mare, and yes sometimes she does squirt, but mainly only when Dinky's pony snorts, rears and runs around, which sets her off squirting. They had to be seperated last year when I bought my mare, due to the pony repeatedly mounting her. We thought we would try them together again this year, I just got through the gate, getting her headcollar off, when he ran at her and mounted her, went and told Dinky and her Dad(my husband) and again in a short space when they got there, he mounted her again.(on both occasions then she never squirted) but then did afterwards. So has been put in a seperate bit over electric fencing, but in the same field. There has also been other geldings around her, over the fence, and nothing happens between them, and they show absolutley no interest, and she doesn't either. When I bought my mare last year, she had bite marks down her bum, and hoof marks from pony mounting her. My gelding did chase him off the 1st time he done it the other day, and ignored him afterwards.

I meant above, she had no bite marks when I bought her. just noticed it read like that. Only after having been in with my gelding and Dinky's pony, and I saw her pony mount my mare, I realised which one it was, they where seperated, and no more marks on her. She was being shod today, and dinky put pony in stable, and he was jumping up and down on door and pulling his tongue out, looked so funny, I said to farrier look at him, sex mad.
