Just wanted to add my best wishes to everyone else's, I know what you're going through as it's nearly 12 months since I lost Naz to colic which was a dreadful day Hope Sabina pulls through - at least she sounds as if she's improved and the new vet is more switched on so fingers crossed for her.

I can sympathise with you Nikki. A 2yo on the yard where I keep my foal, suffered a gastric impaction before xmas. He has been at Bristol University Vet Hospital for four weeks now. He is gastro-scoped almost daily. He was on a drip intially, and had a permanent tube down his nose dripping fluids into his stomach, but it didn't work, so he had colic surgery to loosen the impaction - his stomach was so distended it had pushed his spleen out of position. He had to have his stomach contents pumped out, and was clinically starved for 13 consecutive days. He is now eating very very watered downed alfalfa pellets. He has subsequently suffered displacement of the gut (from the spleen etc returning to their original positions) and two more blockages because of this. Hopefully he is coming home this week to continue his recovery on slop, however, if he impacts again, then there is nothing more that can be done. His vet bill is £10,000 and he has lost over 100kg in weight We have all had a very stressful xmas, and I know his owner has hardly slept, and knows exactly what you are going through. Best wishes to you all xxx

Speedy, your story knocks mine into a cocked hat....god, how awful Sabina has pulled through, completely.... after a 2nd night on my feet with her outside the house...(for those who know it, literally outside the front door) monitoring her intake of 'slop' ie. cooked linseed and bran mush with chopped carrots and apples to entice her since she initially refused it. I asked the 'new vet' about 'liquid paraffin' and had Sabina not 'done' anything this morning he would have done just that, but there is a theory here that IF you ply them with tranquillizers in cases like this it inhibits the digestive system... and they like to try warm water first to 'soften' the bulk then, if all else fails, 'vasaline oil' or 'liquid Paraffin'...anyway, that's the explaination I got, and now she appears to be fine, if not A BIT HUNGRY so, I created a tiny 'paddock' below the house and that's where she is now with Coco the Shetland of course, some water and some very, very short grass. She never needed to continue her drip, because of her poo this morning, but I still have to pay for the 20 litres of 'drip' she didn't have.... however, the fact is she's got through.... although several, several kgs lighter, to say the least. I can't tell you how relieved I feel and totally, totally exhausted.... it's been a very long 2 days, but with all the walking, fussing, caring for and attention, she did it.... and I'm off to bed!!!!!!
