Well she doesn't look as if there's much improvement, although there are 2 copious poo's there... she's literally hanging off her rope, standing there looking miserable, and trembling. She still tries to go down, even with being tied short, and it's a pathetic sight to see, and she still is kicking weakly at her stomach. OH has been fantastic.... he pulled all the stops out and has set the egg-timer for every 10 mins. whereupon he goes out to check her and walk her. We are now in the embaressing position of 'needing' to ask for another Vet. OH doesn't want last nights back. Oh god, I feel so weak. He's still up now, having not gone to bed... crikey, is he scoring Brownie Points here... (he's watching Osmosis Jones for about the 8 million'th time) Seeing that giving a sedation seems to be 'normal' (from reading your posts) IF she has to have another tubing, we will insist on it. But if he refuses point blank, then what? At least it's not raining at the moment - more later.

Nikki, only just seen this. Sending huge amounts of love and support to all of you. Your OH does pull through when the chips are down, we know that, and Sabina is a tough strong girl, so I'm sure she will be in there fighting too. It is good news that at least some of the impaction has moved, but it sounds as if the lovely girl is still not out of the woods yet. Hopefully, Sabina will not remember the bad handling she received last night, as she will have been thinking about her pain, and associating with that a lot.
Please give her a big hug from me and keep us updated, I will be thinking of you and OH too and sending strength.

Nicci---the modern approach in this country is to encourage the horse to lie down in cases of colic , provided they don't roll frantically. Sometimes they can relieve the pain by lying in a certain position, can you not let her try this if you can provide her with a good bed? I had to have a horse tubed at Chistmas, and the vet definately sedated her 1st, and she is the most laid back horse in the world. I pray that Sabina gets better soon -----hugs to you .

Two poos in the night - a very good sign. I cannot understand why the vet did not give her pain relief. If she`s in pain this will make her even more shocked ( she has symptoms of shock by the sounds of it). Has she been drinking Nikki? Look out for dehydration. Hope this morning`s news is better and good luck with finding another vet.

Hope shes looking better soon.
We had one with colic that the vet tried to stomach tube.
We never did manage it, she just reared and reared. I ended up on the floor numerous times, but thankfully the vet didnt hit her. He didnt want to sedate her to do it as he thought that could slow the gut down more

Really hope things have turned the corner for you Nikki - how distressing for you all - I've never had to go through this so far so don't have any personal experience but it sounds horrific. Big hugs to you allx

Well, she's better, but not out of the woods yet. OH went to bed at 3.30am and I started my shift... she was very uncomfortable and I walked and walked her, fearing that when I stopped she would want to roll. At around 8.00'ish I made the decision to find another Vet... I couldn't justify putting Sabina through another session like last night. So making sure she was OK I phoned round to all the riding people I know here, and not one, not one single person had a Vet that was either here, (on holiday) or near enough to come... unbelieveable.... so I had a brain-wave... I risked leaving Sabina for half an hour and drove to a Stud farm half an hour away that I knew of. I didn't know it's name or who owned it, just that it was there. I arrived as the 200 odd TB mares were being put out in their fields and found the head Lad, and told him my predicament and asked him whether I could ask one of their Vets to come and have a look at Sabina. This 'absolutely lovely' Vet on duty there said he would come immediately, driving behind me.... he took one look at her, listened to her gut, reckoned she had problems in her teeth, (which I knew) which caused food not being chewed enough, and possibly causing a build-up... he then took from the back of his car a portable scanner and scanned her stomach and announced that it was totally blocked, which I think we knew but was nice to have that confirmed, and then put her on a drip to re-hydrate her, gave her a pain killer and now we wait... he asked me to cook up some Linseeds and add some bran... she won't touch it... but she is exhausted and hungry and until the drip was put in, has been lying down, not rolling, but just taking the weight off... this Vet seems very switched on and in touch... he's coming back in 2 hrs to take a blood sample and monitor her himself a while.... we both feel so tired it's not true... if having been up more than half the night wasn't enough, walking miles certainly has done it for me... but I feel we are there.. things are certainly more positive. As for the Vet last night, I phoned him and asked him to not bother turning out this morning as everything was under control, and he just muttered that it was fine.. the nice NEW Vet phoned him too, after he arrived here, and cleared that he was taking over, so that was perfect. We're both very impressed with this 'actually quite attractive young Vet'!!! (well, I am not sure about OH!) and as usual, when things go right, he can do no wrong.... let's just hope he manages to help Sabina pull through completely... More news later....

Maybe he should have administered a muscle relaxant alongside a sedative , and possibly liquid paraffin would have had more of a lubricating effect on the gut than tepid water. Did he do an internal at the same time to feel if the blockage was nearer the pelvic flexure/ caecum area .

Sorry , Im talking about the first vet not the second who certainly seems a little more on the ball . However if her stomach is totally blocked , instead of encouraging her to eat he should maybe consider tubing her to reflux her stomach contents this will give it some relief. Possible an abdominal tap should be done to check that there is not already a rupture present , and if the stomach does not become active in the next 24 hrs then the possibility that it is grass sickness should be considered , particularly if there is nothing coming through ,and after he has done a rectal to check that the large intestine isnt impacted. I think in this country she would have been packed off to hospital by now. good luck with her.
