Just sold our old work horse of a landrover and thinking of replacing it and one of our every day cars with a 4x4 which could both be an everyday vehicle and tow the horse trailer.
As we cover 60 miles a day I would prefer it to be as economical as possible (asking the impossible maybe?) and as reliable as we can get.
Do you have any suggestions or recommendations?
Thanks

SWB shoguns are brilliant both for towing and as an everyday car

I have a Vauxhall Monterey (Isuzu Trooper in disguise) which has all the power of landrovers (I drove several for years) but the comfort of a car. Tows like a dream and because, like the landrovers it is normally only in 2 wheel drive, it isn't TOO thirsty. Mine's diesel, does in the mid to high 20s mpg and I use it for 24 miles a day round trip to work and back, as well as on motorways - tootles along quite happily at 70+. I don't know Mitsubishi's and Fords etc, but the Trooper is great for me.

I have a Daihatsu 4trak.
It's fantastic for towing. It has selectable 4WD so is usually in 2WD and as a result mpg is around 28-30, especially since being serviced. It happily does around 70mph. And is making very light work of the snow! Oh, and not too expensive to insure.
However........ it's not exactly a luxurious ride! It's rather unrefined and doesn't have too many creature comforts.
But I love it to pieces.

Sooper Trooper 2.8 turbo diesel. Loads of creature comforts even though it's old, because it's a Jap import. If you get an import you need a tame mechanic though I think.

I get my hands on one regularly Gemma - only way to keep the car on the road ;D Toyota is brill if you can afford one, I'm guessing you mean a Landcruiser Lydia00? My tame mechanic does Toyotas too! I think you'd need to watch the weight you are towing with a 4trak, Gemma, but you only tow one horsey don't you?

4traks are one of the best towing machines on the market, I think you may be getting confused with the 4trak sport which is one of the lighter models. As you say Gemma not the most refined of cars but they are damm good workhorses.
Troopers are good but do becareful of the new models, prone to engine blowing up, my dad had one and it had to have a new engine, something to do with the oil mixing with the diesel. I had one of the 2.8 older models that Kas has but not an import when I sold it I had a queue of people waiting to see it, fantastic cars

Isuzu troopers are in my experience the best! Although the Daihatsu 4traks are excellent too! very reliable and a good tower, also make a good every day car!

I have a Toyota Landcruiser and would only change it for a newer one (in my dreams!). Tows like a dream and fantastic in this cold weather too. I can get 8 bales of shavings in it (and the same in hay much to hubbies disgust when he saw the mess inside it!).

I've a Nissan Terrano II, not too bad on the fuel but i've got a diesel. Nice ride and fab to tow with but as horsey doesn't like being in a trailer it's going to be on the market soon. Hoping to get a car with a reasonable sized boot and start saving for a lorry!

KAS - the 4trak has a maximum towing weight of 3.5 tonne (I think). Which is why I opted for one. 9 times out of 10 I've just got the one horse but there are occasions where I'll have a friends horse as well.
