Perhaps then Kafee, the rat my SIL had was one in a million as she was quite clean as rats go (she bought a boy rat, then a few weeks later "he" gave birth lol) Oooooops, how many did she have? I'm very happy to be proved wrong but there were definitely trails left along all the 'perches' in my rats cage. I had 2 pairs of females, but not at the same time. The things that really upset me about pet rats are their short life span and the high incidence of tumours. One of each pair of rats I had developed tumours. I had the tumour removed with the first rat, only for it to grow back. She took the stitches out the first night, so the vet put them back in and bound her in elastic strapping, the sticky stuff, which worked very well. When she got another tumour, it was back to the vet. Same treatment, but I think he bound her up too tight in the elastic strapping because she got very thin and weak, but wouldn't eat much. Once she was over the second tumour, her face then started swelling up, so I called it a day. Not sure I'd have a tumour removed from a pet rat again.

Im not sure... was years ago, atleast 10? does that sound about right? She found homes for most of them and kept a couple. A couple died while still babies. One of them she gave to one of my sisters, and called him Rattus lol she only had him a year, as like you say tumours.. his was inside a back leg and it swelled so much he could hardly move, it wasn't fair to keep him going and the vet said he would more than likely have other tumours inside elsewhere too. Another friends son, used to keep them too, but a run of bad luck saw them having asthma. Im not especially frightend of them, and will happily give one a cuddle

I wonder why that is Ratty is no more sadly he was found in the garden this morning, he was indeed a "he" ( i think) and had blood on his mouth and a hole in his tail this saddens me as i presume poison may have been responsible..... poor beasty. I say poison due to the blood and the fact that dogs had not eaten him.
