Rats are actually quite clean critters... Tame ones that is.. wild rats are a whole lot different... Wonder if it is someone's pet gone on the run?

Colonies of 50 to 60 AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I did feed some at the local swimming baths once. They were very tame. I dropped a bit of my lunch and one popped out of its hole and then they just kept coming back whilst i sat eating they were a foot away little critters. Im kind of glad its not mice as they just pee everywhere but this little rat is not really wanted in the house. Interestingly the little critter is quiet tonight, Holz is zonked on sofa has been all day pretty much after her night shift.

Oh no Troop, don't get emotionally involved with your rat........ They're terribly destructive and can chew through electrical wiring with drastic consequences, you really don't want it living in your cottage!

Just looked at julz's clip of the trained rat... wow, how impressive is that! Sounds like clicker training going on there. I don't mind the coloured ones so much, but the wild brown ones just give me the heeby-jeebies. There are any amount of them here on the farm this spring, I think the mild winter has been kind to them. I always see a couple in the cowshed when I go in last thing as I'm checking on a cow close to calving. Bloomin' rats don't even bother to run away now, they just look at me and wander off in a leisurely fashion.

Arrrrrrrrrrrgh, troop, I'm not surprised you didn't sleep well. I'm very fond of small furry creatures, but I won't tolerate uninvited ones in the house. We've had mice and I tried humane traps, but in the end I resorted to killing traps. If there was a rat in the house I would leave no cushion, carpet, heap of papers, box of junk unturned, until I knew it was gone.
A friend of mine had mice in her house and I was called on to help evict it/them. My techniques were too slow as she really, really, loathes mice, can't stand them. Another friend who happened to have a litter of kittens, advised her to get a cat (!) so she did, and has had to put up with mice being invited in by the cat from time to time! Kitten is now about 19YO and doesn't catch mice any more.

I've had a number of pet rats over the years, and as much as I loved them as they are intelligent and affectionate, I haven't managed to toilet train one yet, and consequently they have been smelly. Hamsters are easy, because they mark their territory with wee, in one or two places, so all you need to do is get them to mark some thing, eg. hamster potty, jamjar, food bowl, that you can remove and wash out. They often do this themselves without being trained. You still get a slight odour as with any animal, but I find hamsters one of the cleanest, least smelly pets around. My rats always seemed to leave a trail where ever they go.

Perhaps then Kafee, the rat my SIL had was one in a million as she was quite clean as rats go (she bought a boy rat, then a few weeks later "he" gave birth lol)
