which RA laddiesmum, she sounds like Suzanne who I had.
She taught me long-lining (IH way instead of the BHS way that seemed really complicated) and this has given us so much to do, Scarlet is a very hot headed young TB, very large horse that you really couldn't out work, so I was getting concerned that I couldn't possibly keep her fit enough by not riding, now I work her everyday (not always lining, sometimes do some road work, sometimes foundation stuff) but the long lining really is keeping her muscle tone fantastic, I can really keep her as fit as any of the ridden horses on the yard. Only thing is that if I knew at 50 I was going to have an equine that needed a massive amount of ground work then I'd have got a Shetland instead of a TB LOL!!!!!!!!
Vonny (it's a long thread now & without re-reading) have you done any long-lining, if you get this mastered then that's really impressive to those experienced riders that have never tried, RA is pricey but they take all the mystery out of the technical stuff, make things achievable.

Yes Lesley I have done long lining previously with another pony I used to have. I now have the problem that I cannot keep my right arm extended for any period of time as it is too painful. When I lunge I tuck the whip under my right armpit as again it is difficult due to pain. Oh life would be so much easier if I didn't have the blasted shoulder problem!! I used to be a dab hand at long lining There is an RA locally whom I have considered asking to help me find workable methods so might give her a try

Now I've lined scarlet for quite a while I find I hold the lines as I would ride, soft and elbows bent, she does love her lining so is very cooperative, but it may be a good idea to have a session or to with RA to see if the lining can become workable.
