My Section A has been unrugged so far but she came in shivering on Monday after being out in the falling snow all day. She's been fine since as it's just been cold and dry but as more snow is now forcast I thought I might get her a rug for while it's actually snowing, rahter than keep her in. I've seen a Shires Tempest 180g and a Masta Avante 170g both at £40. Can anyone particularly recommend (or not) either of them? Thanks!

They would both be too heavy to me for something that has been fine unrugged except in snow - if you're anywhere near me and its -8 with u too and shes fine in that she'l roast going into a medium weight. Id be looking at a 40-80 gram personally

mmm, I agree with Bertie.
Talin has been rugged for a good while now (anything less than 12 degrees in wet weather and he needs rugging) and he's only in 140g and has a low chaser type clip and he's plenty warm enough, I definitely wouldn't want him in anything warmer.

Oh ok thanks! My old lady is in a 100g so could get one of those? I've never seen one less than 100g, can you name one I can look at? I've got an unfilled one but won't use that in winter. Bertie I'm in Pudsey near Leeds, think it's about -4. Thank god for Exmoors! She's yet to notice it's winter

I've put my senior Sec A mare into her medium weight (Mark Todd, 200g) for the first time this week. Previously, she managed either without or with a rain sheet when windy/wet (Amigo 600D). She hasn't been too warm in the 200g med weight. I've been happy with both brands in terms of being water proof and a good cut. Only drawback on the Amigo is lack of leg strap attachments (which I added myself).

I think premiere equine do light weight, the big horse shop do too - or you could fleece underneath your low fill provided its waterproof I hate leg straps - one reason I like amigo and TBHS

I was just thinking that I could put her fleece on under her no-fill. Might just do that for how much use I'm gonna get out of a new turnout rug. She's soft cos she was rugged and stabled a lot for showing as a younster. Oops!
Not bothered about leg straps although most of my rugs end up with baler band on the back anyway lol!

Yep, mine's a premier equine 40g with a 100g liner clipped into it, not cheap but I love it. They also do 70g and I think amigo do a 70 or 100g, can't quite remember.
Funny Bertie, I prefer leg straps to fillet strings, I hate fillet strings getting pooey! Why do you not like leg straps?

Thanks everyone!
I had a look at Swish but they don't go small enough.
I've found a 40g Fal on ebay so think I'll treat her- she never asks for anything, unlike the sweet itch Exmoor and the toothless old lady lol!

Yes I thought it was you I remembered who had a 40 gram PE rug lol I hate leg straps for the way they rattle around their legs, touch, often have annoying metal buckles in the middle - for the danger of them getting legs caught in them getting up (had to climb someones fence the other day and rescue a horse as it had both back legs through the wrong loop with rug pulled round like a twisted straightjacket!) Im a bit weird bout clothing myself so know how annoying I find a lot of things on clothing lol. RE the poo - horse ware have a plastic covered fillet so you just wipe off with baby wipes

I was going to say a PE one or fleece underneath. I personally have nothing against leg straps, but have a horse who will go through the roof if you try and put them on her. My previous YO tried to put her new rug on her and it had leg straps, Rosie tried to sit on her and then proceeded to spend the day trying to trash said rug (she finally managed to rip it in half...) and then refused to be rugged at all for a week

40g really is barely more than a no-fill sheet - a useful rug to have (as I don't really use n0-fill sheets) but for what you are after, I'd probably go for a 100g fill. The Shires Tempest 100 is a nice rug for a good price It's really not that thick at all, perfect for natives.

My new livery is small pony they bought a derby house he is of slim build and it a lovely fit, full neck its there version of a heavy weight but more like a meduim , its the red checked 1, its also 1200 denier so tough and they have a sale on atm, not sure it would be great round the chest for wider ponies but over all im impressed

The 40g Fal will probably be fine if you can get it. My mare has one and its a lot warmer than the PE 40g, in fact it's what she's been wearing this week in the icy weather and she's snug in it.
