I know most people don't like winter but this stupid inbetweeny weather is getting ridiculous now! It's 12 degrees in Leeds today and it's just managed to stop raining for a couple of hours. I'm getting worried about my sweet itch pony as she's completely unprotected at the moment, it being January and all, but the midges are gonna be having a field day in this weather! I can't put a SI rug on her though when she's wading through mud/water up to her knees half the day. Most of the horses on the yard have got mud fever (not mine thankfully) and I dread to think what's going on with the worms! If it would just freeze for a couple of weeks at least their legs could dry and their feet get a bit of respite from the constant wet. I'm worried about their skin too in this weather, all sorts could be lurking in those two-inch long coats in this warm damp weather!

I must admit when we had a week of freezing wether a couple of weeks ago it was nice to be able to walk on firm ground rather than squelching about!!

I agree. Honey has SI too and I'm thinking I'll have to start her regime soon!! As the midges are bound to be lurking soon. :-((

Yep, am looking at starting sweet itch prevention with my younger mare as well, she isn't itchy yet, but if this carries on she will be, sooner than last year. Going to start the no-rub next week, and the marmite/brewers yeast in feeds. My 3 are moulting already and I'm already fed up of being covered in fluff when I groom them,

We've had three dry and mild days here - I went down the field on New Year's Day to see the cobs, and they were standing dozing in the sunshine, with dry coats and warm ears - it was wonderful to see!
And tonight I saw a BAT......... aaaaaargh, can't stand them, bad enough having to put up with them in summer, but in January??

Liz! Bats are great If you cup your hand and tap the other fingers in it they swoop down and you can feel them whizz past! x

Funny that I saw a bat tonight too, I thought they hibernated? I am desperate for a bit of cold!!! Bugs need to freeze to death! Ponies are sweating unrugged but not enough of the time to clip when they not in work.. The mud.. Aarrgghh!!

Ha ha ha - I do understand but they have never ever got caught in my hair (yet) !! Spiders are my nemesis! Very strange weather though, I did see midges out yesterday. We need a good freeze to kill off all the bugs or they will be rampant this summer

No the weather is perfect I hate being cold. I can understand the need to stop having as much rain but it can stay like it was today until March then get warmer for me it is super mild dry with a light breeze drying up the fields. I dont have any mud anyway so that bit doesnt worry me just need the grass to grow and it will be perfect

Lol! I don't like being warm- once it starts to creep up to about 15 I get grumpy.
I saw bats last night too!! I shrieked and swore. I hate bats, they're like ginormous moths/butterflies! Makes me shudder just thinking about them!

I LOVE bats!! We have them in the tree at the bottom of the garden, I love watching them swoop about, catching insects. They're really cute.
