We're overrun with owls!! It's a bit freaky, there are tawnys twit twooing all round the yard and fields and then the odd little owl screaching over the top. And my JRT's been "playing" with a pair of foxes in the back field too. The wildlife has all gone mental!

Yep, saw a bat have a quick fly round in the barn on Wednesday night too. I love bats Looking at the longer range weather forecast on the Met office website (I am a bit OCD about weather) at the end of December it was mentioning cold weather at the end of January but is more vague at the moment. There is still time for a cold snap. Meanwhile I am just grateful that the mud is getting a little less wet. The horses are glad of a bit of sun on their backs too

Coby has been itching his tail again too, there was a cloud of Midges at the field on New Years Day .... Like everyone else, i`m hoping for a frozen spell too.

Eeerrrrruuuuuggghhh!!!! Sorry Sarah, bats SO give me the heeby-jeebies, pathetic, I know - something to do with that thing about them getting stuck in your hair, which is probably an urban myth anyway.... ;D sorry Liz but I LOVE bats, we have two species of them living in our cottage roof AND I'm off to Suffolk next week to do a bat survey . I've seen a few flying about this week, it's a bit worrying because they had a very bad summer with the awful weather, lots of them didn't breed at all or the mothers had to abandon their babies and now they're waking up from hibernation and using up energy they'll badly need if we get a cold snap. Let's hope enough insects have also woken up to give them a good feed. It is a myth about them getting tangled in your hair though , their echo-location system is very sophisticated and they're unlikely to make such a major navigational error. Not that that's any comfort if you really don't like them

Yes, we've got bats flying here too! And today I've seen a bumblebee, a honey bee and lots of small flies/gnats etc. It is great that the ground is drying up and my Shetland is chestnut again, not "black."

;D thanks Sarah - a busman's holiday huh? I'll be on a quarry near Needham Market, just off the A14. Is that anywhere near you? Back on post, the hazel catkins are unfurling here, the birds are singing and it definitely felt like spring today. The Hellebores (Lenten not Christmas roses) are flowering before the snowdrops have even poked their heads above soil level, and the ravens are noisily announcing their intention to nest in the old pine tree up the hill. The seasons are getting scarily muddled.

The blackbirds were going bonkers this morning! It feels like spring in the air but it's meant to get colder agin after Wednesday.

Its so confusing for the poor horses, and my chickens have starting laying well this week, they must think Spring is round the corner. Mares at work are cycling again already, doesn't seem as if they ever stopped cycling over this winter ! Wonder if this yr will be a hard year to breed with mares cycles all over the place

It's very frosty here this morning! My youngster had his sweet itch hoody on a couple of days ago, that's twice so far this yr and its only 9th January!
