It's not just bridleways that horseriders can use. You can ride on BOATS (Byway open to all traffic) and white roads. Often you can link from quiet lanes to bridleways. Cheshire only has 60 miles of bridleways in the entire county, but with a bit of exploration by car and on foot, and with a little ingenuity, you can make the most of your local riding. We set up our own bridleway group about 7 years ago now. If you go to www.northcheshireriders.webs.com you can see how we went about it, and how we made the best of our local riding.

think i need to get an actual OS map, bit hard to try and move around well on the online maps. Im quite lucky in that we have the TROT route we pay to use, but it is shut some days, so would be good to find alternatives, or even just a different route to go off on part way round the TROT

flipping heck mellymoo - here comes some illegal riding then! The two or three ones there are miss me completely! I used to know and ride with a girl who, if she saw the gate to a field open when out riding, would go in and canter round. She had no shame! Not something I would really recommend if you want to stay on good terms with local farmers.... ....although there is a field near me that looks VERY tempting......

depends if ur prepared to go around afterwards, scrub out the hoofprints and bury the poo!
Seriously though Mellymoo I think that is worth a few of us getting on to its dire around here and really shouldnt be!

I used to find that a friendly chat with farmers, and a promise not to ride when ground was too wet or crops or stock in the field got me permission to gallop off over most fields. Mind you 'not wet' can be the hard one!

you can get an OS map printed with your yard/field/home/stable as the central point. A freind did one for me but we have so much off road that I don't often go exploring.
