Many of us have wanted to do something in memory of our DG friend, Nikki Italy, who died two weeks ago last night. There have been PMs flying about and several ideas , including dedicating our eventual DG book to Nikki ( she has contributed a lovely piece about the Transhumance). More immediately, I know that some of Nikki`s friends would like to do something instead of sending flowers to her funeral, which took place last Monday. Something that Nikki would hopefully have approved of. Several of us will be sending a contribution to the IHDG fund for this year, aimed at making life better for the horses and ponies in the care of Equine Market Watch (EMW). If you would like to send something, the details are below. Hopefully, Elaine from EMW will be able to get something more permanent with our contributions, depending on how much we raise. Lorraine L will receive cheques in the post if this is easier for you. Please PM her to get her address and write cheques out to Intelligent Horsemanship Charity Donations and write "Nikki Italy" on the back. If you pay something into a bank or via Paypal, please PM Lorraine so that she knows how much the total "Nikki fund" will be. Cheques can be paid into the charity account through your bank, as follows: Bank to receive donations HSBC Bank Wantage Branch Account Number: 81248715 Account Name: Intelligent Horsemanship Charity Donations Sort Code: 40 - 45 - 36 Credit or Debit Card payments can be made through Paypay www.paypal.co.uk ihforsale@yahoo.co Thank you, Ann

I think its a lovely idea and something for EMW would heartily meet with Nikki's approval, i'm sure.

Ann, You're just a couple of hours ahead of me with this. Thank you for thinking of it. I've been thinking along the same lines, but really want to set up something that will involve not just Nikki's online friends (that's you lot!), but all her friends and family worldwide. I've been looking a horsy charities, and thought that either the ILPH or some kind of retirement home/ sanctuary would be closest to what Nikki most cared about. All advice on this appreciated. What have the IH nominated charities been in past years?
Meanwhile, heartfelt thanks to all of you who expressed sympathy for Nikki. We have been really touched by the many individual kind remarks and by the extent of the response as a whole. Thank you all.

Hi Justin, It is good to hear from you. You and the children, and Nikki`s mother and family have been so much in our thoughts. I do hope you didn`t mind us getting something going. The last thing we wanted to do was to over-ride your wishes in this. I agree with you that the horsey charities are most probably what Nikki would have chosen herself . This year`s charity, Equine Market Watch Sanctuaries, is one that has the IH Discussion Group has been involved with for some years. Elaine, who runs it, is one of Nikki`s DG friends via the Scary Day and other "diary" threads. If you would like to find out more about it, their website address is www.equinemarketwatch.orgThey have only recently achieved charitable status, so are smaller than ILPH , Redwings and the other equally worthwhile equine charities. Elaine and her colleagues are very interested in applying IH and natural horsemanship methods, wherever appropriate, to help in the training and rehabilitation of the horses and ponies that they care for. Are you still happy for us to go ahead with our donations to this , or would you prefer us to wait until you have thought more about it? Do send me a PM or an e mail (address will be on Nikki`s directory) if you want to discuss this less publicly. Best wishes, Ann

I shall make an online donation to EMW. However, can I suggest that the 'permanent something' be something inexpensive, perhaps a tree planted at one of the EMW branches? Nikki didn't strike me as being materialistic and I'm sure would want every penny to be spent where it was needed. I would if it were me. Hope that doesn't sound out of order!

I think initial thoughts were along the lines of water troughs Frances, so practical as well as in memory. I also wondered about a bench with a plaque. One thing about EMW Hereford is that it is a lovely peaceful place with great views. It might be nice to give the workers there, or visitors, somewhere to sit and contemplate for a few quiet minutes while watching the horses and ponies in the fields. We're not expecting this to bring in a huge sum of money (but you never know), but it will be spent on something lasting that will enhance the lives of the EMW residents and workers in some way. As long as you identify your donation as Ann has asked in the first post, whatever you send will go to whatever cause is agreed between Jusin and Ann

EVERYONE - If you want to donate to the Nikki fund this is what to do. If you donate direct to EMW it may not be identified as part of the fund, and we haven't finally settled the beneficiary with Justin yet.
