My mother has been through an operation and its been discovered that an infectoin-septicemaia (sp) has spread throughout her body. It has affected her vital organs and she is now on life support machine. Chance is low that she wil recover. I'm just wondering if anyone knows anything of the chance of recovery and what to expect. This only happend last night and its still a shock.

Leanne, I can't help with any information but I'm so sorry you've had this desperate news. I can only offer my support. Are you far from your mum? Are you able to be with her? I hope you're not sitting alone with this.

you mum is in the best place, they can keep her stable and treat the bacteria, I think they need to do tests to see which one it is.
Your mum will not be in pain or anything dont worry about that, they will treat her with drugs to try to get rid of it, and it all depends on how much a hold it has and which bacteria it is.
Dont know chances of recovery, you can only wait, which is the worst part of it.
Hugs too you ..... I hope she gets better any chance of recovery is better than none.
its an awful shock, sit and talk to her maybe that can help it does sometimes, even about rubbish stuff let her know you are there, many people say when they are unconsouce that they are sometimes able to hear. it will give her some strength for her body to help fight it from the inside...
shouldnt tell you this but I will be honest, my father in law had this and did not recover, but he had a very very severe infection from a big cancer surgery, and he had gone into toxic shock before he even got to the hospital, and collapsed at home. They kept him sedated he was not aware of anything, he went very calmly and quietly.

Leanne there is always, always hope. People are put on life support to rest the body so it can busy itself with fighting the infection.
People can recover from sepsis related organ failure so keep hoping and praying for your mum xxx

As Beany says, there is always hope. The life support machine will be doing the breathing for your Mum . She will also be sedated and she should not be in pain because of the drugs that they have given her. Your Mum will be having the best antibiotics intravenously (straight into her blood steam), where they can get to work immediately on fighting the bacteria. The intravenous fluids in your Mum`s drip will help to flush out the toxins (poisons) that the bacteria have made. She is in the best place to deal with her serious condition. The doctors, nurses, physios etc in an ICU are there 24/7 and will be highly trained people who can deal with problems quickly. They will also be aware of your Mum`s psychological needs and will talk to her whenever they do anything for her, or to her. When you go to see your Mum, talk to her and touch her, even if she does not seem to be aware of you. When people recover they often speak of being able to hear their family`s voices and of how comforting that was. I hope there is better news for you tomorrow.x

Hi thank you all for this. Sadly my mother didn't come through, but there were a large number of family who were aound who loved her.
I was there and I'm glad that I was there.
Thanks to you all-she was angel who was called back early.
The last thing she said to me ws she loved me-I will carry that on.
I am very like my mum and I feel proud to be so-I carry her on in me.
She is with me always.
