Olive's been barefoot for nearly 5 years. She's never really been entirely sound over all surfaces, but I put that down to her being a TB and a sensitive kinda gal! She also had HUGE flare at every trim and needed me to do intermediate trims every 3 weeks or so.
Since she's been on b*gger all grass and a lot of hay (and various supplements), she's been 100% sound on all surfaces and is hacking out daily on the roads. She's also been about 7 weeks between trims without developing any flare at all. Angel's on the same regime and today I just trimmed his fronts after about 9 weeks. There was hardly any flare and I just needed to tidy up the underneath.
I'm sure that they both had a touch of LGL all this time now. I shall be keeping them on VERY restricted grazing this spring and summer and feeding them hay all year round. I may even stable or muzzle them if I feel it's needed. But I'm so glad to have a solidly sound horse again after years of booting and walking on verges! I always thought that being out 24/7 roaming over a large area was best for them, but I'm now discovering how wrong I was...
I'd really recommend that you give it a go, Mags. It does sound as if it's LGL.

hmmm ty ppl im really thinking about the low grade laminitis now. Can anyone list the symptoms for me www.unshod.co.uk and look under 'Articles.' Lots on LGL and IR there--it's my EP's website and he's seen an awful lot of it!

He's not been on grass much ltill last 2 weeks and on hay instead and he's been fantastic. He's always been better behaviour wise off grass too. My trimmer is coming on 8th so going to have a word with them and in mean time going to take him off grass and see how he goes.

Quite possibly LGL, there's a good article on www.unshod.co.uk about it mentioning TB types in particular. It rings true with my experiences with Tess. Last winter we grew wall and toe flare out and started developing concavity. Come the summer the flares returned with a vengeance and the concavity went, we went back to square one in many ways. Come the autumn and winter the flares are gone again, concavity is growing back in and she went 5 weeks without needing her walls touched, QED as far as I'm concerned It goes against the grain to restrict Tb grass intake but it looks like it's needed, in our case and quite possibly yours too Out of interest this was Tess's white foot when the shoe came off, is this the sort of redness you're talking about? I assumed it was scorching to be honest.

No idea yet what I will do long term if keeping him in works. Not my land so cant kill off the grass. There is a smaller first I could try and swap for so there wont be much grass and just turn him out for afternoon. Luckily he is odd in that you have to kick him out anyway. He likes been in

Mags if I remember correctly most of it peeled off after a couple of days, so I don't think it was bruising.

Toe shooting off forwards like a ski slope and separation/stretched white line can also be signs of LGL.
I keep my horse on grassless turnout, it's hard to find anywhere that you can, so I appreciate how lucky I am.

Erm? I'm a lodger, I rent a room, so I don't have a room to rent out I'm afraid. There are spaces on the livery yard I'm at though. Sadly I don't have my own yard, or even my own flat/house, I don't even rent a whole flat, just a room. *violins* Did you really want to live in Leeds though?
