Maremma and Bardello saddles of Italy Thanks heather. I think they sound familiar. KFC's are totally stuffed with straw though and need to be worked in and absorb the sweat of the horse. The older they are the better they get ... abit like a good pair of boots or me for that matter!! Yes Sarah your OH decided to be poorly and you abandoned me It was very interesting as he sat on different saddles (really wish I had paid more attention and wrote the names down now) and demonstrated how they placed you on the horse. he looked really funny on an english saddle. Pea on a drum sat too far forward. He even pretended to be drinking a glass of champs and tried to talk in a toffy english accent. He was not taking the micky it was for fun (before anyone attacks him) Anyway his favourite was this straw stuffed one with no tree. It was pretty firm and the weight of the rider would be distributed pretty well in the horses back. He said these saddles must not be used with a pad underneath as it affects the straw drinking the sweat. apparantly this is important ... cant remember why?? It is also impossible to do the rising trot in this saddle. Still havnt found my computer .. anyone seen it?

before after heels are still too low and i'm tipping back but i think my leg position is a whole lot better just from lengthening my stirrups and putting them back to the second bar.

I'd agree. The horse looks lighter in front too.

Hi everyone, I find this topic fascinating and wanted to add that it the saddle plays an imperative part in this process. The saddle needs to allow the horse to walk out with a long and low head carriage first. I have found with my new saddle my horse reached out and forward as soon as I set off and yet with my old saddle it took me approx 3 months but she still was not able to hold herself in the same free way when I tried this new flexible saddle. I guess it s the difference between trying to run in shoes or trainers!!
The other consideration is that generally it takes about three months of exercising approx 5 days per week to build up some good muscles. This also impacts the self carriage.
