thank you very much Heather for your comment and time! He's a Welsh Cob Sec D who I've been retraining 'properly' with help since April last year! The throat latch - will sort that. Reason why I asked is that I'm trying to get my 'eye' in for what is correct and what is definately not! Unfortunately I have plenty of his pics of the NOT...

I love Welsh Cobs, Maggot- you could turn him to classical as well any time you wish!

eeek, don't tempt me Heather!
Just had western saddle fitter out who tells me my beloved saddle ain't fitting anymore... she then gleefully mentions your saddles - which I did look at but ho hum, I really really like all the western gear and the folk I meet are lovely. Not sure I want to change my way of life (I'm sure you 'Classical Folk' are just as nice but I can't do both!)
Anyway, until I sell this blasted expensive but now useless saddle of mine I won't be riding at all - very sad considering we've been out on endless trail rides just recently...
mind you, there's always bareback?

bareback trail riding??! Even I wouldnt be crazy enough for that! On a serious note,I assume you are joking, but just in case I would say that you shouldnt ride bareback for long periods as it does create 2 nasty little pressure points on your horses back.

butterfly - huh? why hide! I just don't like the look of the western style treeless saddles that's all...not sure how good they really are so haven't gone down the route of any saddle yet until I sell the one I have!
sarahfox - nah, you got that bit wrong, mebbe I worded it wrong, I won't be riding at all as I won't put the saddle on him as it no longer fits. The bareback bit would just be a bit of fun in safety of the arena, walk only, pref straight lines, with bungy attached, oh and mattresses underneath...

I rode Cosworth "bareback" quite a bit recently - he did wear a Griffin Nuu-med saddle cloth and a Prolite pad strapped on with a stretchy surcingle though

You are such a lovely person Heather ;D
I was wondering if you would say the barefoot was bad for them (pressure point n all that jazz)
KFC mentioned on his last course that he would stay away modern treeless saddles.
Mind you his favourite saddle is over 100 years old, no tree and stuffed with straw. It would cost a fortune.

I dont think klaus knows much about modern saddles tbh, butterfly. All his horse experience was in spain and he seems to know little about other countries.I would be very surprised if he actually looked into treeless saddles properly before dismissing them, same goes for his opinions on barefoot horses. The saddles that he likes are similar to the vaquero saddles,I believe his favorites are the french version. The problem with these is that they generally come in one size, which is probably not too bad if you have an iberian horse with a typical iberian back, but even then izz was ridden in a vaquera in spain and has some horrific scarring to prove it!

HI Butterfly,
There are straw stuffed treeless saddles in Spain and Portugal, at least the pommels and cantles are, and also the Maremma and Bardello saddles of Italy, on which the Torsion was based.
