OK - Here goes to embarrass myself Rider - should be capable of recognising straightness, have good hands, balance and feel. Instructions to rider - Half halt and then give an exaggerated aid for canter on the other leg. The bend changes to that of the new leading leg so that it is true canter and not counter canter. So half halt, change bend and aids ie prior inside leg on girth is moved to new outside leg position behind the girth and a definite aid applied.

well hello, well i for one would use the oldest method known to man and beast...I would close my eyes and whilst taking slow controlled breaths i would visualise the "CHANGE".. Obviously i have such an interwined intuned relationship with my (unbroken) ben, that he would just know.Obviously lol..xx U LOT ARE SO BEHIND THE TIMES

Sarah, another minus 3.
Tammy, nothing to be embarrassed about. 10 for brevity, 3 for format.
Iammizz, 10 for brevity, 0 for format, bonus 10 for concept.
K, bonus 5!

oops forgot to add the reason I wanted to put another reply is cos sometimes even the best novice adv riders ain't gonna 'get it' and there are lots of ways to teach a rider how to get a flying change!

Oh wow! I'm so proud I'm at the top (even though it's not got a lot to do with my method LOL)
I really wanted to try Susan's explanation today but it was too slippy...and when I asked R's last owner if he could be ridden through flying changes, the responce I got was "not really...I leanrt that the hard way"...so I'd liek pretty much perfect ocnditions for when i try!!!
I like this thread! it's made me laugh! ;D ;D
Has to be said though - when i do "teach" my friends etc, I find that they pick things up much faster if you're really encouraging and supportive- I know instructors who jsut kind of grunt, and don't give any real enthusiasm but who are very quick to point out what's wrong...I'm very into constructive criticism and I like to ask the rider...as I believe if the student has to think for themselves, they learn more - "If it dind't go well, WHY didn't it go well? What happened? Why do you think that happened? however, when you did ........... it was really nice, well done. Now try this...."

do lots of figures of eights until the horse gets it. Then feed carrots and put him back in the field.
The next day I would introduce a cue each time he did it.
Then maybe he would do it on cue in a week or two!!
Would that work??
