Sue - my chair didn't, it's either being a very naughty nappy chair, or I was giving the wrong aids.... or it might just be that it's an inanimate object, I am not sure.
Hell I'm so underqualified to coach anyone on their canter, on my little horse the routine is: Apply the aids, 18 of her left feet go one way, 12 of her right feet the other, sometimes she falls on her nose but sometimes we get snorting 100 mph canter with dramatic sound effect squealing ... she's very green in the school and not the most athletic build in the world. Can you imagine putting a daddy long legs on roller skates and pushing him out onto the kitchen floor?.... that's what my horse looks like when I ask for canter ;D Flying changes will evade us for a good while yet!

I would ask if my advanced novice rider knew how to ride a sidepass, if they did then I would ask them to make the same movement as they come across X at a canter! Cos that is really the same movement for a flying change. The leading legs/striking hind switch over in moment of suspension to 'fly the change'.
Prerequisite would be to have rider ride the centre line straight, then asking them to shift hip from left for a few strides then immediately right (all in trot) using cues from legs then they could feel when that hip swings up ready for the direction in which to ask for canter left or right. Knowing the horse is trained schoolmaster would help the rider feel right and left swing.
There should be lifting of the shoulder, bit like a skip as the back end comes through at the same time as the front end changes lead. No change in gait should be felt, rider should concentrate on going one way forwards and collected canter and then changing focus to other direction. Breathing OUT at the time you cross the X is good indicator to horse and for person to concentrate too!

Well I think I should get points for not being repetitive - as typing the same thing out as Susan again would be! Hee hee...

Mags, hope and prayer is unfortunately not an accepted method for this, so you get the 40 spectator points.

Not a trainer but any means - the only times I have done flying changes (other than flat out on a mountain round an unexpected corner..) I've been on school masters and I just *think* flying change and it happened every time.... I'm just after my 40 spectator points (or should that be auditor now, isn't that what they call them these days??) Niki xxx

I really dont mean to be awkward, but it does depend a lot on how the horse is trained - some thins would be right for one horse and wrong for a another, ofr instance one horse I once rode had been trained to strike off into canter with the riders inside leg giving the cue. Now When I came along and asked with my outside leg, she got rather confused and gacve me the wrong lead, everytime, I tired harder and harder and ended up making all sorts of awful mistakes i think with my positioning because I was trying to exagerate so much to try to get the right leg, all I needed to do was ask her regular rider how he had trained her and hey presto! They are only aids afterall - buttons that we have programmed, sure, some work better with their bodies and brains then others but if I put the aids I give for a flying change, which do work, they might not be the same as somerone elses - but if they make sense to the horse, are the wrong?
I know - I have hundreds of points subtracted for being awkwards, pedantic and finding an eleaberate cop out of giving a straight answer. I think Ill go away and think and try to come back with a straight answer to cancel some of my negative points out!
thanks for the interesting thread sue! rosie

Mags, you get 1 point! So you're on 41 ;D Niki, 40 points and 5 bonus points for an interesting contribution. Rosie, you are on minus 10 for breaking the rules. Just wanted to hear the methods, not discussion at this point - no judgement on the validity of the methods. So yes, you're bottom, because Casper redeemed herself from that place by begging.

rider must be able to canter on a named leg on the straight, from either walk or trot. lift inside seat bone, slightly raise inside hand, inside leg on girth to execute canter, outside leg behind gently place to discourage shifting of the quarters. eta: the lifting of the inside seatbone coincides with the stepping under of the outside hind once established start simple changes (c-w-c) on figure 8 and straight lines reducing the number of strides of walk until you have one stride. setting horse up - if he is a true schoolmaster and you ask right he will f/c anywhere! my 2p worth

Flashback, 10 for brevity and 5 bonus for answering questions as asked!
I'm going to have start keeping the scores! I'm delighted at the number of people who have taken the time to think about this and put in their two pennoth!
